Rooti Abuukey, also called Abuukey or simply referred to as Rooti, is a type of bread eaten in Somalia, Djibouti and other countries.[1][2]

Ingredients

The bread most commonly served in Somali cuisine, rooti abuukey, is usually eaten for breakfast or dinner with soup, meat or tea and malt oil.[3] It is made from flour, warm water, sugar, salt, oil or butter and eggs (optional). It is a national dish of Somalis, which is particularly popular for reciting the Qur'an, short events, and wedding breakfasts.[4][5]

History and culture

Rooti Abuukey is a symbol of Somali table culture and literature. It has a long history, different types, and different methods of preparation.[6] It plays an important role in the daily life and culture of Somalis.[7][8] Even though modern changes have brought many new dishes, this bread still has a special place in the hearts and tables of the community.[9][10]
