Rotaeno is a paid mobile rhythm game developed by Dream Engine Games and published by XD Network Inc.. The game released on May 30, 2022 for iOS and Android devices, following a pre-registration campaign.[1] Rotaeno is the first mobile rhythm game to combine traditional touchscreen based rhythm game mechanics with motion control.

Synopsis

Ilot, the story's protagonist, lives on a technologically advanced planet called Aquaria. 12 years ago, Aquaria experienced its first rainfall that never stopped. Due to this "Endless Rain", Ilot is forced to move from her home planet to avoid flooding and she embarks on a musical adventure in space to explore different planets and find new people.

Gameplay

Rotaeno requires the user's device to have gyroscope or accelerometer capabilities in order to play; otherwise, the player cannot perform certain actions in game. Following the tutorial, players can select from two modes: Quick Play or Journey Mode.[2]

Quick Play

In Quick Play, players select a song and an accompanying difficulty to play. Notes approach the judgement line from the center of the screen, and some require the player to rotate their phone left or right to make sure the note stays within view.[3] Players tap, hold, and slide to the music and quickly flick their phone in a specified direction to complete rotate notes. Song selection varies and players can choose songs from multiple song genres, including EDM and J-pop.[4] The soundtracks featured in Rotaeno are supervised by HyuN, a Japanese rhythm game composer.[5]

Players earn experience points based on how well they performed in order to level up. After leveling up, players receive "Traveler Badges" which are used to unlock more tracks. Alternatively, players can acquire more songs by purchasing expansion packs using Stellar Gems, the in-game currency. Some locked tracks require the player to enter "Journey Mode", Rotaeno's story mode.[2][3]

Journey Mode

The story in Rotaeno, released in chapters, can be accessed by entering Journey Mode. By completing songs, players also earn Miles, which are used to progress through the story. Redeeming Miles and Traveler Badges in Journey Mode unlocks scenes similar to a visual novel and new songs available to play.[2]

Development

Rotaeno began development in 2016 by Dream Engine Games, a small, independent team based in Hong Kong.[6] In an interview with XD, Chris Choi, developer and producer for Rotaeno, remarked that it was difficult finding people to collaborate with. Through another project of his, Choi was contacted by Kei, who worked for many other rhythm games and was interested in being the leading art director for Rotaeno. As the project grew, the team did as well, with HyuN joining as music director.[7]

The group worked on the game for three years before showcasing the game at ACGHK 2019 in the indie games section. The goal for the team was to officially launch the game, according to Choi.[6] Choi said he was inspired by Japanese arcade rhythm games to utilize the gyroscope inside the phone to incorporate elements of motion control. He also noted that along with licensing music from other creators, Rotaeno would also include some original tracks. Originally titled "Groove Wheel", the game was intended to be free-to-play with in-app purchases. The game was set to release in late 2019,[8] however the launch was delayed.

In early 2020, Dream Engine Games held their first closed beta test. In a series of tweets following the test, the team announced that Rotaeno would become a premium purchase and would be published by "an experienced rhythm game publisher", now known as XD Network Inc.[9] The following year, Rotaeno was displayed at TpGS 2021 (Taipei Game Show, 2021) in January. Choi remarked in an interview with GNN that level design was difficult for the team due to the rotation aspect of Rotaeno; most charts, or levels, had to be remade multiple times.[10] Following numerous delays from the initial release date, X.D. Network announced in July 2021 that it planned to release the game the next year.[11] Near the end of March 2022, Dream Engine Games held another closed beta test that concluded in early April before releasing Rotaeno in late May of the same year.[12][1]

Reception

Rachel Mogan with Android Central wrote "Rotaeno's imaginative approach to mobile rhythm gaming feels like the first swell of a new wave in the genre", and that the game's story mode had "good writing, lovely art, fun dialogue, and fascinating world-building". However, Mogan also noted that "additional song packs could really start to add up fast if you're not careful".[3] Ed Orr from GameSpace criticized the initial song selection and difficulty curve, but praised the concept, stating "What initially seems to be a cool control quirk quickly turns into an integral part of this experience, challenging players..."[13]
