Route 4 is a documentary movie by Boxfish and Martina Chamrad, which was produced together with the support of the NGO Sea-Eye and the Mennonite Aid Agency. The documentary sheds light on the european refugee cirsis and the journey of refugees from Africa to Europe. Especially the flight over the Mediterranean Sea and the work of Sea-Eye are the focus.

Plot[edit]

Route 4 is an independent Projekt by the NGO Sea-Eye. The Main focus isn't on the or refugees in total Sea Rescue, but on a birds eye perspective on the whole situation and the terrors of Libya. Route 4 tells the story of the dangers of this journey into and out of Libya. The Movie shows the way from Agadez (Niger) to Europe. Route 4, the namesake of the film, was chosen by the film production for the most dangerous of many routes across the Med, the central mediterranean Route[1][2]. 2016 more than 373.652 people crossed the sea on this way.[3]. More than 5.000 people died in the same year.[4][5]

Background[edit]

Route 4 is the documentary debut of the munich based director Martina Chamrad, who has experiences on refugees from her parents who moved out of eastern europe. The movie is a complete independent production financed only by Sea-Eye the Mennonite Aid Agency and the production company Boxfish.[6] It was born from working with Sea-Eye on many rescue missions on board the Professor Albrecht Penck (later Alan Kurdi) with the working title Far from Home over the span of 3 years. The shooting locations were the Mediterranean Sea, Niger, Italy, France, Germany, Tunis und Spain. .[7][8][9] The Titeltrack "Wenn ich gehen muss" is performed by Rapper Tua.

Awards[edit]

Route 4 was nominated at the oscar qualifying festivals Bronze Lens in the category Best Feature Documentary and was semifinalist at the Rhode Island International Film Festival.

In addition to many more international awards the movie won at Lonely Wolf London International Film Festival in the category Best Documentary Feature.[10][11]

Route 4 premiered in cinemas in Germany and Austria on 24.11.2021
