Rugged Maniac South Carolina 2016 was held in Mt Pleasant, South Carolina for the 6th annual time. Three-time runner up, Stephen Wilson, set the fastest time of the day, at 25 minutes 41.3 seconds. Matt Bare, the winner of the Elite Heat wave of runners, was also a former overall runner up in 2012. Bare posted a time of 28:51.8.

For the female portion of the race, Melanie Jones finally captured her first win, after coming in second place for the 2013 and 2014 Rugged Maniac events in South Carolina. [1]

The course featured 25 obstacles over a length of 5 kilometers. The newest obstacle for Rugged Maniac 2016, called "Bang the Gong", was featured for the first time ever in South Carolina, in which participants jump on a trampoline to hit a gong, before falling into a water pit. A record-breaking number of participants were registered for the 2016 event in Boone Hall Plantation, approximately 5,500 in total.[2]

Activities included live music, mechanical bull-riding, full-sized bounce houses, beer, and food in a large festival area at Boone Hall. Some of the spectator activities during the festival included pie-eating contests, beer stein hoisting, arm-wrestling, speed oyster-shucking, and dance offs. Harpoon Brewery, the official sponsor for Rugged Maniac South Carolina, provided a beer garden with brews on tap. [3]

Exhibition booths were onsite by local sponsors, such as Palmetto Warrior Connection, Sneakers 4 Funds, TQL, Khouri Chiropractice, Title Boxing Club, Mix 96 FM, State Farm Insurance, WarriorPak, MAD-Abolic Inc, O2 Fitness, Iron Tribe, Dude Wipes, Healthsource Chiropractic, and Mud Run Videos. [4][5] The US Marines, from North Charleston, South Carolina were also volunteering at the event.[6][7]
