"Run Boy Run" is the second episode of the first season of the American superhero web television series The Umbrella Academy based on the comic book series of the same name. The episode, which was originally released on Netflix on February 15, 2019, was directed by Andrew Bernstein and written by series creator Steve Blackman.

Plot[edit]

In a flashback to 2002, Number Five (Aidan Gallagher) argues with Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) during dinner. Five believes he's ready to attempt time travel, but Reginald says he is not ready to do so. Believing he knows better, Five runs away from the house and attempts to time travel; he succeeds, but eventually arrives in the apocalypse after going through several time periods, and is unable to travel back when his powers don't work. In the present, Five finishes explaining his time in the apocalypse to Vanya (Elliot Page), but Vanya believes that time travel merely messed with his mind, and that there is no impending apocalypse. Five agrees to stay at Vanya's apartment for the night, but leaves once she goes to her room.

Meanwhile, assassins Hazel (Cameron Britton) and Cha-Cha (Mary J. Blige) arrive at a motel, having been assigned to terminate Five for an unexplained reason. At the donut shop where Five killed the men who attempted to kidnap him, Detective Eudora Patch (Ashley Madekwe) investigates the scene, but the only witness has already been interrogated by Diego (David Castañeda), who is revealed to be Patch's former friend and ex-boyfriend. Patch reprimands him for interfering in the scene when he is not a police officer, but Diego insists she needs his help. Meanwhile, at the Academy, Pogo (Adam Godley) asks Klaus (Robert Sheehan) about a box that mysteriously disappeared from Reginald's possessions, but Klaus denies knowledge despite the fact that he took the box and pawned it for drug money. Also, Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman) tells Luther (Tom Hopper) about her daughter and how she would like everyone to meet her.

Five, tracking down the origins of a prosthetic eye he found in the apocalypse, arrives at the company where the eye is manufactured, but is forced to leave after he threatens the employees for information. He later returns with Klaus, who pretends to be his dad, and manages to get information on the eye, but discovers the eye has technically not been manufactured yet. Klaus and Five leave, with Five despondent at not being able to stop the apocalypse.

Vanya receives a new violin student, Leonard Peabody (John Magaro). Leonard shows visible interest in her, and Vanya reciprocates but is hesitant to pursue a relationship. Meanwhile, Luther discovers that Diego had an alibi at the time of their father's death, thus couldn't have been the culprit. Back at the Academy, Pogo shows Allison some security tapes of The Umbrella Academy as children. Allison watches the tapes, only to find a strange and disturbing tape.

Five arrives at a department store to find Dolores, a mannequin he had a relationship with during the apocalypse. As he converses with her, Hazel and Cha-Cha arrive at the store, ready to kill Five. Five take Dolores and manages to outrun the assassins long enough for the police to arrive and escapes. At the Academy, Allison tries to show Luther the tape she found, but they're interrupted by Five arriving from his fight with Hazel and Cha-Cha. They try to help him, but Five tells them there's nothing they, or anyone, can do.

Reception[edit]

Scott Meslow of Vulture praised Five's storyline throughout the episode, but criticized the overall tone and pacing of the episode. He gave the episode 3 out 5 stars, stating, "If there’s a lesson to be taken from Umbrella Academy’s somewhat disappointing sophomore episode, I think it’s this: If your show is about a whole family of superheroic misfits, you should spend most of your time with that family of superheroic misfits. We’ve barely met these weirdos, and there’s more than enough to unpack between them before we start worrying about their exes or their students or their beloved mannequins." [1]Elise Dumpleton of The Nerd Daily wrote, "While not as exciting as the first episode, I must say Aidan Gallagher expertly manages to portray an older man trapped in a teenage body. Hazel and Cha-Cha are a welcomed sight as they’re definitely going to be bringing some action into the fold, and they seem like quite the odd pairing, but their scenes together are marvellous. As for Vanya’s new student, it’s clear something will be happening there with his very relevant sob story, so looks like Vanya will be facing some trouble very soon."[2]
