SAE Institute UK

The SAE Institute (SAE) UK is part of the SAE Institute network of colleges around the world that provide creative media education programmes to more than 10,000 students at 40+ campuses globally.[1]

In the UK, SAE Institute has campuses in London, Liverpool, Glasgow, Leamington Spa and Leeds.

The SAE campuses in Europe, UK, New Zealand, South Africa, USA, Canada, Mexico, the Middle East, South-East Asia, South America and at other licensed campuses are known as SAE Institute.[2]

The abbreviation SAE originally stood for School of Audio Engineering, reflecting its initial focus on audio production when it was founded in Sydney, Australia in 1976 by Tom Misner.[3]

While the original acronym remains, the SAE Institute is now known for its diverse offerings in the creative media sector providing specialist vocational and higher education courses.[4]

SAE Europe is part of AD Education Group along with UK partner institution ICMP – The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance.[5]

SAE Institute UK offers multiple courses at the various campuses in the following subject areas:  Animation, Audio Production, Content Creation, Film Production, Games, Music Business and Web.[6]

History:

SAE was established by Tom Misner in 1976 in Sydney, converting a small advertising studio into a classroom. Over the next six years, campuses in Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth were established. In the mid-1980s, SAE began opening colleges outside of Australia, including locations in London, Munich, Frankfurt, Vienna, Berlin, Auckland, and Glasgow.

In 2010, the SAE Institute was sold to Navitas, a publicly traded educational services company. In 2022 Navitas announced the sale of the SAE operations in the United Kingdom and mainland Europe to Ardian backed AD Education.[7] AD Education includes a group of 21 creative colleges.[8]

Leadership:

The AD Education UK Corporate Board is the primary governing body overseeing the activities of SAE UK and ICMP, both part of the AD Education Group.[9]

SAE London

SAE London is located in Haggerston, East London. It provides students with access to top tier equipment in both SAE House and Bankstock Studios.[10]

SAE Liverpool

SAE Liverpool is based on Pall Mall in the centre of Liverpool and has industry-standard facilities and high-specification equipment favoured by professionals. [11]

SAE Glasgow

SAE Glasgow was established in the early 1990’s and is situated at Kinning Park on the southern side of Glasgow. For two decades SAE Glasgow has built up a strong reputation in the audio and digital filmmaking industry and offers students hands-on access to industry-standard facilities and equipment. [12]

SAE Leamington Spa

The SAE Leamington Spa campus opened in 2023 and is located in The Fold a Grade II listed and renovated church on Spencer Street in Old Town, Leamington Spa.[13]

SAE Leeds

SAE Leeds opened in September 2025 and is located in a new 17,000 sq ft campus within the Grade II-listed Electric Press building.[14]

Bursaries/Scholarships:

SAE provide financial support through bursaries and scholarships. Bursaries are non-repayable awards given to students who meet specific set criteria.

In 2025 SAE piloted four industry aligned scholarships in Leeds covering Audio, Film, Games, and Content Creation.[16]

Alumni:

The SAE Alumni Association is SAE Institute’s student and graduate network.[17]

SAE UK's global community of alumni includes industry professionals who have achieved recognition.

Notable alumni of SAE UK include:

Oscar winning sound designer Niv Adiri.[18]

Nigel Godrich - record producer, recording engineer and musician.

Adrian Bushby - recording engineer, mixer and producer.

Ricky Damian - Grammy Award-winning engineer/producer and mixer born in Italy and based in London.[19]

Billy Butler - Awards include a BAFTA and an Academy Award for his film work on Gravity with British VFX company Framestore, which was responsible for creating most of the film's visual effect.
