Education[edit]
Holman received their MFA in Photography from the Savannah College of Art and Design, and a Diploma from the Emily Carr College of Art & Design in 1991.
Queer Art Festival[edit]
Holman co-founded Vancouver's Queer Arts Festival, in 2004, and the SUM Gallery, Canada's only queer-mandated transdisciplinary gallery in 2018. Holman remained the artistic director until 2021 when they were succeeded by Mark Takeshi McGregor.[3]
BUTCH: Not Like the Other Girls[edit]
BUTCH features a series of black and white portraits of women who identify as butch, meaning masculine in appearance or behaviour. The idea for the project came Holman's desire to show people that they could be beautiful as themselves.[4] Holman wanted to show straight society, in particular, that women exist outside the culture's narrow definition of what it means to be female. In an article in Georgia Straight, Holman stated that they are “really interested in the liminal space, the spaces in between that don’t occupy the binary of gender,” The exhibition travelled across North America and has been published by Shooting Gallery Publications. The photographs were shown in galleries across Canada and the US, as well as 20 bus shelters in Vancouver.
