SP Cinemas is an Indian film production and distribution company based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. It was established in 2017 by S. P. Sankar. Since then, it has produced three Tamil films: K-13,[1] Maara,[2] Oh Manapenne,[3][4] and distributed K-13 and Baaram.[5][6][7] The team Sankar, Kishore and Naren, worked for PVP Cinema, where they handled production, distribution and marketing, later branched out to start their own production house, SP Cinemas.

History[edit]

SP Cinemas was set up by SP Sankar in 2017. Its first production was Barath Neelakandan's K-13 (2019) starring Arulnithi and Shraddha Srinath. Along with production, SP Cinemas also has distribution, which they started with K-13.[8] The company then went on to distribute the 2020 film Baaram, directed by Priya Krishnaswamy. The film was based on Thalaikoothal, a traditional practice of senicide observed in some parts of southern districts of Tamil Nadu.[9] The film won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil. Their next production was Maara, directed by Dhilip Kumar starring Madhavan and Shraddha Srinath and it is the remake of the Malayalam film Charlie (2015). The movie was released through Amazon Prime Video on 8 January 2021.[10] The next film produced by the company is Oh Manapenne, the Tamil remake of the 2015 Telugu film Pelli Choopulu.[11] It is directed by Kaarthik Sundar with Harish Kalyan and Priya Bhavani Shankar starring.[12]
