SafeCast is a British-based technology company, which was founded in 2013 by Alistair and Diana Kelman. The company was created following the grant of a UK patent. The UK IPO granted the patent on 22 October 2013. The patent (GB2498499) was entitled “System for providing improved facilities in time-shifted broadcasts”. A summary of the patent is that it ensures inappropriate advertisements are not shown to children or vulnerable people. This is achieved by the inclusion of tags or metadata within television advertisements and automatically processing them in the TV set or set top box, substituting inappropriate advertisements for appropriate advertisements. The technology is of universal application and can be deployed in browsers and in IPTV too.[2]

On 12 July 2016 the United States Patent and Trademark Office granted the SafeCast patent and gave it U.S Patent No.: 9,392 302.

On 1 January 2017 the company revised its website and began trading under the name SafeCast, its UK registered trade mark.

On 16 November 2017 SafeCast published a video submission to the DCMS Internet Safety Strategy Green Paper on YouTube entitled "Age Verification - Protecting Children on TV and the Internet". The 25-minute video addresses the section of the Green Paper on “Technological Solutions to Online Harms” It was picked up by and referred to in Ed Vaizey's weekly newsletter on 15 December 2017.

In February 2019 SafeCast was invited to join the Digital Production Partnership (DPP) as a Member to allow it to participate in the DPP's standing committees on common technical and metadata standards for digital TV production. SafeCast joined the DPP on 11 February 2019.
