Safety is an upcoming biographical-sports drama feature film, based on the story of Ray McElrathbey. The film is a Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures production, that will be released exclusively on Disney+.[1]

Plot[edit]

The film focuses on Ray, a young man facing various challenging experiences in his personal life. His hope and persistence assist his pursuits, defeats his trials, and allow him to play football through a scholarship at Clemson University; all while he struggles to raise and care for his 11-year-old brother Fahmarr.

Production[edit]

In May of 2019, Discussing Film exclusively announced development of the project, with Randy McKinnon and Mark Ciardi serving as screenwriter and producer, respectively. The film will include depiction of Ray Ray McElrathbey's time in college football and his fight for custody of his younger brother, when their mother checked into rehab.[2]

On September 13, 2019 it was announced that a Safety had begun principle production. Principle photography takes place in South Carolina and Virginia. Reginald Hudlin had joined production as director, with the script completed by Randy McKinnon and Nick Santora.[3][4] Later that month, filming took place at the Memorial Stadium in Clemson, South Carolina on September 23, during the half-time of a Clemson University Fighting Tigers NCAA American football game. Head coach, Dabo Swinney, in an interview suggested that Matthew McConaughey portray him in the movie.[5] Production is scheduled to last until mid-November 2019.[6]
