Career[edit]

Sahar Naja Mahfouz, born in Beirut, Lebanon is a Lebanese author specialized in children and young adult literature. She has been living in UAE for more than 22 years. Before she dives into the world of children literature, she wrote stories and articles on social criticism in Al Khaleej Newspaper. Later she focused her writing on young adults from age 14 to 17[2].

Sahar was encouraged by Lebanese children author Samar Mahfouz Baraj to write for children literature, and she published 40 books in this field. Some of her books translated to English and Spanish and Turkish like My Dancing Letters and Melia the Giraffe.

She drives her inspiration from her childhood and her children’s experience. In the past 3 years, she started emphasizing the importance of imagination in the child’s development. She participated in many book fairs including Sharjah International Book Fair, Abu Dhabi International Book Fair, Beirut Arab International Book Fair, along with other literary festivals like Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival and Emirates Airline Festival of Literature from 2012 until 2018 where she read stories and held workshops for children and those interested in children literature.

She wrote stories for both seasons of “Open Sesame”, and she is a member of the jury committee of many creative writing competitions. In 2013, she founded “Honna” (هنَّ) group, which consists of Emirati authors and artists in the United Arab Emirates, and the group organizes many workshops in schools and colleges in Dubai and Sharjah[3].
