The church of Saint Richard Gwyn and Our Lady is situated in the mid-Wales town of Llanidloes, Powys. It is part of the parish of Newtown within the diocese of Wrexham. Relics of St Richard Gwyn are kept at the church.[1]

History[edit]

The church was built in the 1950s under the guidance of Fr. Kenneth Gillespie, Mass being celebrated there for the first time on the 18th of October 1959.[2] Originally, the church formed one parish with the church of St Francis of Assisi in Rhayader. [3]

A national appeal was made in 1962 for help with finances for the parish, with a series of appeals appearing in The Tablet newspaper.[4]

With the creation of the Diocese of Wrexham on 12 February 1987 the church in Llanidloes came under the jurisdiction of Wrexham while the church in Rhayader remained in the diocese of Menevia. It now forms one parish with the church of God the Holy Spirit in Newtown.

Concerns were raised by local parishioners when an announcement was made in 2016 of the intention to close the Church in Llanidloes as part of a wider diocesan restructuring.[5]

Worship[edit]

Vigil Mass is held every Saturday at 4:00pm.[6]
