History[edit]
The church was built in 1874 when Bishop Bernard Collier O.S.B purchased land on Queen Street from Sir Pryse Pryse of Gogerddan.[1] The project of developing the church on the site was pushed forward by Fr. William Williams who appealed in The Tablet for donations. Work began on the building by March 1874.[2] The Foundation stone was laid by Bishop Collier on the 16th July 1874.[3]
Opening[edit]
The church was officially opened on 19 August 1875. In attendance was Henry Edward Manning who was persuaded to join the ceremony by Fr Williams. The attendance of Cardinal Manning drew large crowds along Queen street.[1]
Name[edit]
The church had double dedication to St Mary and St Winefride. The church took its name from Fr Williams' association with the Church of St Mary of the Angels in Manchester and his personal devotion to Saint Winifred.[1]
