Salman the Persian (Persian: سلمان فارسی) is a currently filming (since December 18, 2019) historical drama television series written and directed by Davood Mirbagheri, based on the life of Salman the Persian. It is the biggest cultural project in the history of Iran. It was originally shot in the Persian language. The show will contain 60 episodes.[1][2] The story of the series is narrated from the birth of Roozbeh (Salman) until his death, and will depicts three historical era, Byzantine, Sasanian and Islam. The series is expected to air in 2026–2027.
Cast[edit]
Apart from the main actors, the producer of the series has told the media that 20,000 actors have been identified, 1,500 characters are present in the series, and 500 professional actors have roles in the series. A large number of young theater actors will play roles in the series as well.[3][4]
Story[edit]
Salman the Persian wrapped its writing in early 1999. The series narrates the life, times and migration of Salman the Persian from his birth to his death and continues until the end of the Ghadir Khumm. Salman left Iran as a teenager and became a Christian, he spent around 70 years in different cities, churches and shrines of Byzantium.
Pre-Production[edit]
The initial discussions and pre-production on Salman the Persian started in 2016–2017, after two years of research and trips to places such as Georgia, Morocco, Armenia, Turkey, Africa, Khuzestan, Lut Desert, Chahbahar, Etchmiadzin Cathedral, Tatev Monastery, Khor Virap Monastery, Garni Temple, Fes, Casablanca, Rabat, and Tangier. The crew visited dozens of historical sites belonging to the Carthage, Berbers and Roman era in different countries, many of which flourished in the 5th-6th centuries AD, at the same time as Salman's travels.
Production[edit]
Salman the Persian started filming on December 18, 2018, in Shahdad of Kerman, after a 20-year hiatus. Not all the filming were done in Kerman, the cast and crew also filmed in other locations such as Shahrood, Semnan, Qeshm Island, Damavand, and Mazandaran. A significant part of the filming will be done in the natural landscapes of different regions in Iran. Turkey was also considered as one of the locations for the series, but due to COVID-19, that plan was cancelled. The crew filmed some sequences related to the Byzantine period in Armenia and Saint Stepanos Monastery in Azerbaijan. The filming on Byzantine season of the series wrapped in April 2023. The cast and crew are currently filming the ancient Iran season during the Sassanid Empire, which includes historical locations such as Ctesiphon, Silk Road, Fars, Isfahan, etc. The crew has also confirmed that some sequences in the Iran season will be filmed in Hyrcanian forests and Fire Temple of Isfahan in Marbin. It will take around two years to wrap the production on this season. The crew has already started the pre-production on the Islam season, which will be the final season of the series.
Costume design[edit]
Mohsen Shah-Ebrahimi is in the charge of the set and costume design of the show. Approximately, 12 thousand clothes have been designed and sewn. Due to the historical nature of the series, clothes have been made to show the historical authenticity of the series. The designing of Ctesiphon, Hijaz, Damascus, Amorium, Jerusalem, ships, castles, shrines, villages, Bazaar, thousands of historical objects, artistic subtleties etc. are made at 30 workshops.
International actors[edit]
Salman the Persian includes hundreds of actors from different countries including Greece, Morocco, Tunisia, Armenia, India, Iraq, Africa, and China. Over 40 professional actors from these countries have roles in the first season. Manos Pintzis, Giannis Spaliaras and Hichem Rostom, three popular actors from Greece and Tunisia, will play roles in the Byzantine season of the series. The producer of the series has confirmed that the Iran season includes less international actors, with the final season has actors from Arab world, Asia and Europe.
