Samantha "Sam" Puckett is a fictional character, serving as the deuteragonist of the Nickelodeon series iCarly (2007–2012), and one of the titular protagonists of its spinoff series Sam & Cat (2013–2014), created by Dan Schneider. She is portrayed by former actress Jennette McCurdy.

Sam is the former co-host of the iCarly web show and Carly Shay's best friend. She is an aggressive tomboy who is street-smart, fearless and often violent.

Biography

Sam was born on April 17[1] to Pam Puckett and an unnamed father, the latter which was stated to have left on multiple occasions. She has an identical twin sister named Melanie, who is the polar opposite of her personality-wise. She was raised in Seattle.

One day, Sam met Carly while the latter was eating a tuna sandwich. She swipes the sandwich, only for Carly to take it back. Earning Sam's respect for that, she befriends Carly.[2] At some point, she was forced to participate in beauty pageants by her mom. However, she was banned for 7 years after she was accused of pushing fellow pageant girl LeAnn Carter down some stairs.[3] At unknown points, she was banned from Arizona, Utah, Ohio, Texas, New Hampshire, Tennessee and Europe.[4]

One day, when Carly wanted to start her own web show of endless possibilities, Sam becomes the co-host to Carly's brand-new web show entitled iCarly.[5]

In "iHate Sam's Boyfriend", she begins dating Jonah, which didn't last. Up until "iKiss", Sam had never had her first kiss, so she kisses Freddie to get it over with.[6] Sometime later, Sam developed a crush on Freddie, as revealed in "iOMG". She felt crazy for said reason and checked herself into a mental institute in "iLost My Mind". After the events of the episode, the two begin dating. Their relationship started strong, but as time went on, they both realized that it didn't work well and their relationship felt rather forced, so they end up breaking up in "iLove You".

In "iGoodbye", after years of filming iCarly, the web show goes on a hiatus so Carly could go live with her dad in Italy. Spencer lets Sam have the 1964 Sterling motorcycle, to which she now uses for travel. She left Seattle, eventually leading into the events of Sam & Cat. Sam has been touring the West Coast on her motorcycle and stops in Venice, Los Angeles. She witnesses Cat Valentine being thrown into the back of a garbage truck and rescues her. They become friends and Cat convinces her to become roommates. Rather than getting traditional after-school jobs to make money, Sam and Cat develop an after-school babysitting business called "Sam and Cat's Super Rockin' Fun Time Babysitting Service". Despite their constant bickering at times, they formed a deep bond.

At some point after Sam & Cat and as of the revival series, Sam left Los Angeles and has joined a biker gang called The Obliterators.[7]

Personality

Sam is an aggressive, sarcastic tomboy with no respect for other people, excluding Carly, Freddie, Spencer and Gibby (sometimes). Freddie always describes her as "obnoxious and aggressive."[2] As a result of her behavior, she frequently gets into trouble. She has a butter sock, which is a sock filled with butter that is swung around as a weapon. She has also been arrested four times. She often tends to backtalk and gets violent pretty easily. She also hates people who are too nice, though she's gotten used to Carly.[3]

Throughout the series, Sam was very hateful and violent towards Freddie for no apparent reason, before and after their romantic relationship. During their relationship however, she turned that hate and violence towards Gibby. She can be a bully, especially towards tech-savvy individuals, despite being somewhat of a tech-savvy individual herself. She often makes reckless decisions. For example, she once licked a swing set despite a warning from Freddie, causing her to become immensely ill.[8]

Though, despite her usual behavior, she can also be very caring, especially to her friends. For example, she once saved Carly, Freddie and Gibby from her old friend Dana and a bunch of her friends.[9] Another example is when Sam took down a bullying senior in their school at the Groovy Smoothie after she shoved Carly to the ground.[10] Sam is also very lazy and often avoids work unless forced. She is very physically strong, having taken down various people, including professional fighters.[11][12] Sam has an eating habit. She commonly eats Fat Cakes, fried chicken and ribs, but she apparently will eat almost anything.

Jennette McCurdy, pictured in 2012, portrayed Sam Puckett.

Creation and portrayal

During the development of iCarly, the pilot script followed a lead girl named "Sam" but the URL for iSam was already taken. Schneider tried other girls' names and bought the URL for iJosie, but eventually changed it to iCarly and enjoyed the name for the lead character. The names of the lead girls were then changed from Sam and Kira to Carly and Sam.[13]

Sam is portrayed by former actress Jennette McCurdy in iCarly, and she reprises the role for the spinoff Sam & Cat.[14] Her portrayal of the character won her four Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards. She did not reprise the role in the iCarly revival series as she since quit acting,[15] and she is ashamed of the role.[16]
