Samuel Lalrozâma Hmar (Sammy) is a Government official, sportsman, entrepreneur, writer, social activist and aviator (Aircraft Engineer) from the Mizo community of the state of Mizoram in India. He is an international referee and was the first Indian to work as a center referee in the world championship in MMA[1][2] and Muay Boran.[3]
On July 2010 he was inducted into the International Martial Arts Hall of Fame.[4]
Family[edit]
Samuel was born on 6 August, at Durtlang, Aizawl, Mizoram, India to Dr.Thangchungnunga and Vanlalrammawii (late). He is married to V. Lalnunpuii, who is a Project Assistant in NEIDA, on 28th March, 2019. They have one son by the name of Invictus Zothanmawia Hmar. He has one younger sister - Abisac Lalhruitluangi. He is from the Hmar- Ṭhiek – Pakhuomate – Khumthur tribe of the Mizo nation. His paternal grandfather H. Vanlalthanga, Tlangnuam was among the founder leader of the first political party in Mizoram – the Mizo Union; and continued to become a VCP under the Congress party. His maternal grandfather Thangbuaia was one of the Mizo National Front Member of Parliament during the March 1966 Mizo National Front uprising. He did his schooling in Punjab (St. Joseph), Mizoram (St. Pauls Hr. Sec School) and Delhi (HPS). He pursued college for engineering in Tamil Nadu, and also passed Master of Arts (history) through distance education.
Sports[edit]
Samuel is an international Level-1 coach in MMA under IFMA and an Assistant Grandmaster in Muaythai under IFMA. He is the pioneer of Kickboxing and Mixed Martial Arts among the Mizo society. He is a Certified instructor and a National Judge & Referee in 10 martial arts styles. He fought at least up to a national level tournament and won medals in all these styles. He was the founder Vice-President of Ju-jitsu Association of India (JAI). He is currently the technical Chairman/ Director in Muaythai Association of Mizoram, Mizoram State MMA Association and Ju-Jitsu Association of Mizoram. He has his own gym - SPES Martial Arts gym, Mizoram[5][6][7][8][9] and formed a fight club with his locality mates called Dawrpui Contact Sports (DCS) under which are Dawrpui Muaythai/MMA/BJJ Clubs which has produced many champions in MMA[10][11][12][13][14], Muaythai[15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23] and BJJ/ Submission grappling[24][25][26]

1. The Indian Olympic Association selected him to be one of the torch bearers for the XIX 2010 Commonwealth Games held at Delhi, India 2010.[27]

1.Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu[edit]
Samuel was one of the pioneer of BJJ in India and was the pioneer in North East India[33]. He started BJJ from 2008 and is now a brown belt under Master Joe Moreira (8th Degree Coral Belt), the IBJJF as well as from the JJGF[34] under Rickson Gracie.[35][36][37] He is currently the head of Team Moreira BJJ India and a 6th Degree black belt in Japanese Jujutsu[38][39].
2.Kickboxing[edit]
He is the pioneer of Kickboxing in Mizoram, forming the state kickboxing association in the year 2000. He is the first State level Kickboxing champion (open weight overall champion) in 2003, and was the bronze medalist at the 2005 WFK World Championship at Iran.[40][41] He then passed the international referee and judge certification and national level coach certification under WAKO India Kickboxing Federation, under the aegis of the World Association of Kickboxing Organizations. He is a 6th Degree black belt in Kickboxing.
3.Muay Thai[edit]
He was awarded the title of Assistant Grandmaster (Gold-Silver) mongkol by the International Federation of Muaythai Associations, Thailand, recognized by the Thai Government on 2020. He played on behalf of India and the Indian Olympic Association in the Muay Thai World Cup 2008, held to honor the birthday of the Thailand Prince; and then he won a bronze medal at the 1st Dap Thai (Thai Sword system) World Championship during the Thai international Martial Arts Festival 2016.[3] He was the National Technical Director of Muay Boran Association of India as well as the National coach in Muaythai India (MTI) National federation.[42][43] He was elected as the Vice president of MuayThai Association of Mizoram (MAM) on 26 January 2018.[44]
4.Mixed Martial Arts[edit]
Samuel's MMA career started in 2007[45]. When Super Fight League, a mixed martial arts promotion, based in India, was formed in 2012 by actor Sanjay Dutt and British Indian businessman Raj Kundra,[46] Samuel was among the first batch of Indians to be offered a contract at the SFL on September 2012. He fought in the SFL Contenders 15, winning by guillotine choke in 01:12 minutes, in the first round.[47][48] In the year 2016 he fought in the IMMAF World Championships of Amateur MMA[49][50][51][52] and Sports Ju-jitsu (BJJ) where he won a bronze medal.[53] He was sponsored by Sony company for that event. He was appointed the North East India Chief Delegate for MMA since the year 2012.[54]
He then passed the national and international referee certification,[55] and was appointed by the AIMMAA and IMMAF be an official, and even as a head referee in various MMA events, such SFL contenders[56][57][58][59][60][61] SFL India[62][63][64][65][66][67][68] SFL Dubai 38 (India v/s Pakistan), BodyForce MMA Fight Night,[69] Delhi International MMA Open 2015 (India v/s Afghanistan),[70] BodyPower MMA international open[71][72] Bahrain MMA tryouts,[73][74][75][76][77] the 1st ever professional MMA fight night held in North East India – Trans V's Bidang Fight League,[78] the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF) 2015 world championship (USA)[79][80][81][82][83] and the 2017 IMMAF World Championships (Bahrain).[84][85][86]
He was a founding member of the Karnataka State Mixed Martial Arts Association (KSMMAA)[87], 2012; Bengkhuai MMA Mizoram, 2010; Mizoram State Mixed Martial Arts Association (MISMA), 2013 and the North East India MMA Association (NEIMA).[88][89][90][91] With his leadership, MISMA started a pro MMA event- Grit[92][93] and the only regular amateur MMA league in the country – JSJ Fight League (JSL),[94][95][96][97] which was later renamed Mizoram Fight League (MFL)[98][99][100] in 2017. A new MMA promtion to promote fighters at grassroot level called Gym Challenge was introduced in the year 2019 by the Zo Fight Promotions Pvt. Ltd. in which Samuel is the COO.[101][102][103][104][105][106]
Profession[edit]
Samuel is currently a group B officer under the Government of Mizoram, working at the Secretariat Administrative Department in Aizawl Mizoram.
In the field of aviation he is a Basic Aircraft Maintenance Engineering License certificate holder in Heavy Aircraft and Jet Engine[107] from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, India and a BTech (Aeronautical Engineering) & Executive MBA graduate. He has worked as an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer and an Aviation Technical Writer in various companies like the Bangalore Government Flying Club, National Aerospace Laboratories, Air Deccan[108], Airbus Logistic Department, Kingfisher Airlines, Kempegowda International Airport Line Maintenance Department and Desires & Designs Technical solutions Pvt. Ltd; working on aircraft like Cessna, Pushpak MKI, Aeronca Super Chief, Hansa 3, ATR (aircraft manufacturer) and Airbus.
Hobbies and Social life[edit]
He wrote his first graphic comic book when he was just 5 years old, and has won prizes in debate, drawing, essay writing and song/ poem writing competitions. He is a member of the Mizo Academy of Letters, and maintains his personal blog. He is the founder General Secretary of the Bangalore Mizo Literature Club.[109] and till date he has composed 40 article and essays, 11 poems/songs and 2 skit/drama which are published in different prominent newspapers, magazines and books. One of his prize winning essay – "Interracial marriage (Hnam dang nupui/pasal neih hi)", published in Chhinlung Magazine Vol.XIX received high acclamation. He has been actively involved in various NGOs since his college days.[110]
He was given a very important role in the Malayalam movie – Karmayogi (adaptation of Shakespeare's Hamlet), acting as a Mizo warrior. It was screened in the competition section at the 42nd International Film Festival of India (IFFI), in Panaji, Goa in 2011[111] and the Malayalam Cinema Today section at the 16th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK), in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala in 2011.[112] He has published a book titled Thalaite Khawvel (World of the youths)[113] and has co-published one more book – Zoram tan (Mi ngaihsanawmte chanchin) with his friends.[114] He is also a certified Neuro-linguistic programming and Neurosemantics practitioner.
