Samuel Lalrozâma Hmar (Sammy) is a sportsman, entrepreneur, writer, social activist and aviator (Aircraft Engineer) from the Mizo community of the state of Mizoram in India. He is an international referee and was the first Indian to work as a center referee in the world championship in MMA[1][2] and Muay Boran.[3]

On July 2010 he was inducted into the International Martial Arts Hall of Fame by the International Martial Arts Council and Asian Jeet Kune Do Federation, due to his services in the martial arts world.[4]

Family[edit]

Samuel was born on 6 August, at Durtlang, Aizawl, Mizoram, India to Dr.Thangchungnunga and Vanlalrammawii (late). He is from the Hmar- Ṭhiek – Pakhuomate – Khumthur tribe of the Mizo nation. His paternal grandfather H. Vanlalthanga, Tlangnuam was among the founder leader of the first political party in Mizoram – the Mizo Union; and continued to become a VCP under the Congress party. His maternal grandfather Thangbuaia was one of the Mizo National Front Member of Parliament during the March 1966 Mizo National Front uprising. He did his schooling in Punjab (St. Joseph), Mizoram (St. Pauls Hr. Sec School) and Delhi (HPS). He pursued college for engineering in Tamil Nadu, and also passed Master of Arts (history) through distance education.

Sports[edit]

Samuel is the pioneer of Kickboxing and Mixed Martial Arts among the Mizo society. He is a Certified instructor and a National Judge & Referee in 10 martial arts styles. He fought at least up to a national level tournament and won medals in all these styles. He was the founder Vice-President of Ju-jitsu Association of India (JAI), and was among the few selected by Karnataka Spots Network to receive distinguished sports award at the KSN night of the stars on 29 January 2011. The Indian Olympic Association selected him to be one of the torch bearers for the XIX 2010 Commonwealth Games held at Delhi, India 2010.[5]

Kickboxing[edit]

He is the pioneer of Kickboxing in Mizoram, forming the state kickboxing association in the year 2000. He is the first State level Kickboxing champion (open weight overall champion) in 2003, and was the bronze medalist at the 2005 WFK World Championship at Iran.[6][7] He then passed the international referee and judge certification and national level coach certification under WAKO India Kickboxing Federation, under the aegis of the World Association of Kickboxing Organizations.

Muay Thai[edit]

He got his Red Mongkol (Equivalent of black belt in other martial arts) on august 2010, and in the year 2015 he was awarded Red-Yellow mongkol (Kru/ Teacher) from the Kru MuayThai Association of Thailand, recognized by the Thai ministry of culture.[8] He played on behalf of India and the Indian Olympic Association in the Muay Thai World Cup 2008, held to honor the birthday of the Thailand Prince; and then he won a bronze medal at the 1st Dap Thai (Thai Sword system) World Championship during the Thai international Martial Arts Festival 2016.[3] He is the National Technical Director of Muay Boran Association of India, and was the ex-National coach in Muaythai India (MTI) National federation.[9][10] He was elected as the Vice president of MuayThai Association of Mizoram (MAM) on 26 January 2018.[11]

Mixed Martial Arts[edit]

Samuel's MMA career started in 2007 when he met the pioneer of MMA in India Daniel Isaac[12] and first professional MMA fighter and coach Alan 'The Bull' Fenandez].[13] When Super Fight League, a mixed martial arts promotion, based in India, was formed in 2012 by actor Sanjay Dutt and British Indian businessman Raj Kundra,[14] Samuel was among the first batch of Indians to be offered a contract at the SFL on September 2012. He fought in the SFL Contenders 15, winning by guillotine choke in 01:12 minutes, in the first round.[15][16] In the year 2016 he fought in the IMMAF World Championships of Amateur MMA[17][18][19][20] and Sports Ju-jitsu (BJJ) where he won a bronze medal.[21] He was sponsored by Sony company for that event. He was then appointed the North East India Chief Delegate in India's oldest and largest Mixed Martial Arts MMA body – the All India Martial Arts Association (AIMMAA]);.[22]

He then passed the national and international referee certification,[23] and was appointed by the AIMMAA and IMMAF be an official, and even as a head referee in various MMA events, such SFL contenders[24][25][26][27][28][29] SFL India[30][31][32][33][34][35][36] SFL Dubai 38 (India v/s Pakistan), BodyForce MMA Fight Night,[37] Delhi International MMA Open 2015 (India v/s Afghanistan),[38] BodyPower MMA international open[39][40] Bahrain MMA tryouts,[41][42][43][44][45] the 1st ever professional MMA fight night held in North East India – Trans V's Bidang Fight League,[46] the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF) 2015 world championship (USA)[47][48][49][50][51] and the 2017 IMMAF World Championships (Bahrain).[52][53][54]

He was a founding member of the Karnataka State Mixed Martial Arts Association (KSMMAA), 2012; Bengkhuai MMA Mizoram, 2010; Mizoram State Mixed Martial Arts Association (MISMA), 2013 and the North East India MMA Association (NEIMA).<ref"NE martial arts association formed". nagalandpost.com. Nagaland Post. 12 August 2014.</ref>[55][56][57] With his leadership, MISMA started a pro MMA event- Grit[58][59] and the only regular amateur MMA league in the country – JSJ Fight League (JSL),[60][61][62][63] which was later renamed Mizoram Fight League (MFL)[64][65][66] in 2017. In July 2017 he started his own gym in Mizoram – SPES Martial Arts gym,[67][68] which has created many good fighters till date, shaping them to win national medals.[69][70][71][72]

Career[edit]

He is a Basic Aircraft Maintenance Engineering License certificate holder in Heavy Aircraft and Jet Engine[73] from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, India and a BTech (Aeronautical Engineering) & Executive MBA graduate. He has worked as an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer and an Aviation Technical Writer in various companies like the Bangalore Government Flying Club, National Aerospace Laboratories, Air Deccan, Airbus Logistic Department, Kingfisher Airlines, Kempegowda International Airport Line Maintenance Department and Desires & Designs Technical solutions Pvt. Ltd; working on aircraft like Cessna, Pushpak MKI, Aeronca Super Chief, Hansa 3, ATR (aircraft manufacturer) and Airbus.

Hobbies and Social life[edit]

He wrote his first graphic comic book when he was just 5 years old, and has won prizes in debate, drawing, essay writing and song/ poem writing competitions. He is a member of the Mizo Academy of Letters, and maintains his personal blog. He is the founder General Secretary of the Bangalore Mizo Literature Club.[74] and till date he has composed 40 article and essays, 11 poems/songs and 2 skit/drama which are published in different prominent newspapers, magazines and books. One of his prize winning essay – "Interracial marriage (Hnam dang nupui/pasal neih hi)", published in Chhinlung Magazine Vol.XIX received high acclamation.

He was given a very important role in the Malayalam movie – Karmayogi (adaptation of Shakespeare's Hamlet), acting as a Mizo warrior. It was screened in the competition section at the 42nd International Film Festival of India (IFFI), in Panaji, Goa in 2011[75] and the Malayalam Cinema Today section at the 16th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK), in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala in 2011.[76] He has published a book titled Thalaite Khawvel (World of the youths)[77] and has co-published one more book – Zoram tan (Mi ngaihsanawmte chanchin) with his friends.[78] He is also a certified Neuro-linguistic programming and Neurosemantics practitioner. He is controversially a member of the Illuminati and Freemasonry organizations, initiated at the Grand lodge of India; and many of his successes are attributed to the involvement of these organizations.
