His work as a screenwriter includes films like Ab Tak Chhappan, New York, Shivaay, Shershaah, and Disney+ Hotstar’s Aarya, a web series featuring Sushmita Sen.

Sandeep has also written dialogues for Kabul Express, Sachin: A Billion Dreams (Hindi) and the video game Ab Tak Chhappan: Fatal Encounter.

As a lyricist, he has written songs for movies like Life in a Metro[2], New York[3], Vishwapooram 2[4], Kahaani[5] and Ludo[6]

Early Life and Career[edit]

Sandeep was born in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. He spent his childhood and did his schooling in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh[1].

After completing his MBA in New Delhi, Sandeep worked in advertising and created corporate ad campaigns for NTPC, NHPC, U.P. Tourism, the Government of U.P. and the Hindustan Times.

Sandeep then went on to do theatre where he worked with Yatrik and Ruchika Theatre Groups in New Delhi. His work as an amateur theatre artist led to his selection in Living Theatre, New Delhi. Here he got to learn the nuances of drama from Ebrahim Alkazi, the founder director of National School of Drama, New Delhi.

Sandeep’s background in theatre and advertising helped him understand film and television as a medium. He began working with television production companies in New Delhi as an assistant director, post production technician and production executive for television shows based on current affairs that aired on DD and DD Metro in the 1990s.

Television[edit]

He wrote episodes for Reporter, a weekly fiction series that aired on DD Metro. He also scripted episodes for the music countdown show Super Hit Muqabla. He later joined Nimbus as an in-house writer. He was the writer and script supervisor on Nimbus’s daily soap Farz for DD National.[1]

He later branched out as a freelance writer with the weekly soap Daraar that aired on Zee TV.[1]

As a freelance writer he wrote a couple of episodes for Sea Hawks produced by UTV, a show based on the lives of Coast Guards in India. He also wrote a few episodes of Balaji Telefilms' daily soap Itihaas. He then worked on Kittie Party which aired on Zee TV.

He wrote the story, screenplay, dialogues and lyrics for Zee TV’s daily soap Manzilein Apni Apni produced and directed by Anurag Basu. Sandeep was also the Creative Director on this show.[1]

He has also written and produced episodes of X- Zone and Rishtey for Zee Telefilms with Wisdom Tree Productions.[7]

Film (Screenplays, Dialogues, and Lyrics)[edit]

He debuted as a screenwriter in films, with the movie Ab Tak Chhappan featuring Nana Patekar, produced by Ram Gopal Verma and directed by Shimit Amin.[8] He received nominations for story, screenplay and dialogue at the Screen,[9] IIFA and Zee Cine awards.

He wrote dialogues (uncredited) for the movie Saaya and was also a part of Anurag Basu's direction team. The film was produced by Vishesh Films.

Sandeep won the V. Shantaram Award[5] for the 2009 release New York, for which he wrote screenplay, dialogues and lyrics.

As a lyricist Sandeep has written songs for films like Life in a Metro[2], New York[3], Kahaani[10], Shivaay[11], Vishwaroopam 2[4] and Ludo[12]

Sandeep has collaborated with Yash Raj Films in various capacities as a writer on New York, as Associate Director on  Kabir Khan’s film Kabul Express, and conducted an acting workshop for the girls who formed the Indian Hockey Team in Chak De India.

He also worked on Shivaay (story, screenplay and dialogues), featuring Ajay Devgn,[13] and Sachin: A Billion Dreams (Hindi script)[14]

Sandeep adapted the Dutch series Penoza into Hindi as a feature film script which later took shape as Aarya[15], a web series featuring Sushmita Sen on Disney+ Hotstar.

Sandeep has written the story, screenplay and dialogues for Shershaah, a biopic on Param Veer Chakra awardee Captain Vikram Batra, produced by Dharma Productions and was released on Amazon Prime Video.[16]

Actor[edit]

Sandeep has also acted in television series and films. He acted in Shyam Benegal’s movies like Samar,[17]  Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose- the Forgotten Hero[14] and Samvidhaan on Rajya Sabha TV[18]. Sandeep was one of the primary characters in the action series Commando, which aired on Zee TV.  He has also played minor roles in shows like Saturday Suspense, Thriller at Ten, Kalash, Class of 83, Upstarts, Shivaay.[19]
