Lance Naik Sandeep Singh, SC,[1] (?–24 September 2018) was a non-commissioned officer in the Indian Army. He was a trained paratrooper who served in the elite 4 Para (SF) battalion.[2] He also participated in the 2016 surgical strike, according to claims made by the Indian media.[3][4][5][6] He was taken into a counter-insurgency operation in 2018.[7] He killed two terrorists in that operation before being killed in action by his wounds.[8] He was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra, the third highest peacetime military decoration.[9]
Early life and education[edit]
Sandeep Singh was born and grown-up at Kotla Khurd village in Gurdaspur, Punjab. He completed his education upto senior secondary level from the same district.[10]
Military career[edit]
After completing his education, he was recruited in the Parachute Regiment. He was later taken into the 4 Para (SF). Lance Naik Sandeep participated in numerous counter-insurgency & counter-terrorism operations. In 2018, he died as a result of the wounds, after killing two terrorists.[11]
2016 Surgical Strike Controversy[edit]
He was a member of the Ghatak Platoon of the parent regiment. In 2016, the platoon that carried out surgical strikes on militant launch pads along the Line of Control in Pakistan. According to claims by Indian media, Sandeep served in the Surgical Strike.[12][13][14][15][16] However, India.com later published an article titled “Slain Soldier Sandeep Singh Did Not Took Part in Surgical Strike”,[17] in which the statement of army officials were highlighted, and it is cleared that the personnel took part in the Surgical Strike is still not known. Therefore, Lance Naik Sandeep Singh was not a part of the Surgical Strike.[18][19][20]
