Sara Margery Lewis (born March 16, 1953) is an American biologist who has contributed to the field of coral reef ecology and the evolution of reproductive behavior in insects.[1] She is a professor of biology at Tufts University, co-chair of the Firefly Specialist Group at the Species Survival Commission of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature,[2] and published author of Silent Sparks: The Wondrous World of Fireflies.[3]

Early life and education

Lewis was born in New Haven, Connecticut to parents Vivian Berman and Herbert Daniel Lewis. At age five, after moving to a rural area in Woodbridge, Connecticut, Lewis’ fascination with the natural world began, setting the course for her future career in biology. She graduated from Amity Regional Senior High School, then went on to attend Radcliffe College. In 1976, she graduated from Harvard College with an AB magna cum laude in Biology.[4] Her senior honors thesis at Harvard was completed on the subject of water quality in the Squam Lakes of New Hampshire.[5]

Academic career

After earning her bachelor's degree in biology from Harvard University in 1976, she went on to study at Duke University where she earned a Ph.D. in Zoology with a minor in mathematics in 1984. Her graduate work was conducted on the subject of coral reef ecology at Carrie Bow Cay, the Smithsonian Institution's marine station in Belize. Her work clarified the mechanisms behind which herbivorous fish grazing mediates competitive interactions between seaweeds and reef-building corals.[6][7] She returned to Harvard in 1985 where she spent the next five years as a postdoctoral fellow in organismic and evolutionary biology. Her postdoctoral research analyzed the subject of sexual selection in fireflies and flour beetles.

In 1991, she went on to join the faculty at the Tufts University Department of Biology. She has taught classes in biostatistics, ecology, and science communication as well as classes more closely related to her research including Edible Insects and Evaluating Firefly Extinction Risk Seminar. Since then, she has become a founding member of Fireflyers International, whose mission is to serve as a catalyst for the conservation of fireflies and their habitats through scientific research, education, and advocacy.[1]

Scientific research

Lewis has published over 100 peer-reviewed publications.[8] Some highlights include demonstrating that both cryptic female choice and male sperm competition contribute to postcopulatory sexual selection in Tribolium flour beetles;[9] showing that Photinus firefly females choose mates based on male flash characteristics;[10] revealing the presence,[11] coevolution,[12] and composition[13] of firefly nuptial gifts; and describing how hermit crabs queue up to form vacancy chains that distribute resource benefits to multiple crabs.[14]

Firefly conservation

Lewis is a founding member of Fireflyers International, whose mission is to serve as a catalyst for the conservation of fireflies and their habitats through scientific research, education, and advocacy.[1] Since 2018, Lewis has worked with the Species Survival Commission of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature as co-chair of the Firefly Specialist Group, a team of international experts who identified the key threats faced by fireflies, which include habitat degradation, light pollution,[15][16] pesticides, and climate change.[17][18] Prioritizing species with the highest extinction risks, the group works globally and locally to protect fireflies and their habitats.[19]
