Sarin is a post-metal band from Toronto, Canada. The band was formed in 2012 and has recorded and released two studio albums and one EP.
Background
Sarin formed in May of 2012 in Brampton, Ontario as a three-piece – which included current members David Wilson (guitar/vocalist) and Aleks Hara (drums). The band recorded several EPs in the early days to positive reception in a live setting. In 2014, the band entered the studio with Southern Ontario producer Collin Young to record their first full-length release, Burial Dream. After this release, the duo of David and Aleks spent the next two years putting together a full outfit, ultimately deciding on the addition of guitarist Matt Dakers (of Pagan Ritual), electronics/keyboardist Brett Cairns, and bassist Paul Barmak (Metsu). Darker Lakes, the band’s 2017 LP, was created with the aim of recording a more layered, denser and collaborative album. As of 2019, the band has been performing in Toronto in anticipation of their third full-length release.
Musical Style and Themes
The band's sound has evolved over their history, but the overarching genre that connects them all is metal. The early works of Burial Dream drew comparisons to the likes of ISIS and Cult of Luna.[1] On Sarin's 2017 release Darker Lakes, the band sound went through a maturing process where their originality started to take shape and the songwriting included more layers of complexity.[2] The sound on the 2017 record was once characterized as "somewhere between bright melodies that shine with each note and a maelstrom of blistering noise and doom."[3]
Thematically, Darker Lakes can be dubbed a concept album due to its inspiration being pulled from band co-founder David Wilson's day-long hike in the Oak Ridges Moraine area. The timbres and song titles of this record are inspired by various natural references such as Glacial, Ocean Burn, Crater, etc., and another theme revealed in interviews has been around anxiety, and how introspection and isolation can help one understand and even cope with anxiety.[4]
