Antonio Michael Hancock (aka Saxl Rose) born in Baltimore, Maryland) is a recording artist, multi-instrumentalist, session musician, songwriter and producer. He is best known for his viral saxophone videos and collaborations with countless notable artists (Chris Brown, Paramore, Neck Deep, Issues, State Champs & more).[1]. He is also the guitarist & songwriter for Maryland rock band, Listen For The Light[2]

Early life[edit]

Antonio Hancock was introduced to music at a young age through his parents Lisa & Wayne. His father Wayne was the lead vocalist, keyboard player & saxophonist in his own band, Trylogy, based out of Baltimore, Maryland[3]. During Antonio's early years, his dad frequently brought him to shows and club dates. His mother was also a club DJ in a local bar in Havre de Grace, Maryland. Antonio's uncle/godfather, Robert 'WaWa' Legrand, was also the guitarist for Teddy Pendergrass until Teddy's death in 2010[4].

Antonio showed an immediate interest in music and started picking up the saxophone at age 5. Once he started band class in elementary school, he had already been playing for several years. He continued studying music throughout elementary, middle and high school. During his schooling, Antonio began gigging on his own and with combo groups; performing at holiday parties and banquets in the local area. He also taught himself guitar and drums. On school nights, his dad would drive them to jazz clubs, such as Club 347, where Antonio would participate in jam sessions. Aside from maintaining first chair in symphonic and jazz band all 4 years of high school, he also went on to win several awards including "Best Soloist" in a college level competition through University of Delaware[5]. He also received the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award and participated in a saxophone program at Berklee College of Music.

Music career[edit]

During Antonio's first semester at Harford Community College, he met Mark Weider, lead singer of Maryland pop-punk Chasing Morgan. During this time, Chasing Morgan was on the search for a drummer and soon asked Antonio to audition to fill the position. Shortly after, Antonio was made a permanent member and began playing shows in the Maryland area until his departure in 2016[6]. During this time, the band was featured on Fuse on their reality TV series Warped Roadies[7] for their hometown performance on the Vans Warped Tour.

During this same time, Antonio was also recording and performing with own band, Listen For The Light. In 2017 during the bands recording of their debut album, producer Taylor Larson asked Antonio to record some saxophone for his solo project, Heavy Eyes (Taylor Larson, Luke Holland, Eli Gibb). Their song "Bad" was later released, making it his first official saxophone placement[8]. Due to the success of the single, he was also asked to feature on Periphery front man Spencer Sotelo's solo project, Mothership[9].

Shortly after this, Antonio began releasing saxophone covers on his Instagram page which started launched his career. One of his first saxophone covers, "Something New" by Wiz Khalifa, Ty Dolla Sign, went viral after it was seen and shared by Wiz Khalifa[10]. His next cover of "Ain't It Fun" by Paramore did over 200,000 views in less than 12 hours after lead singer Hayley Williams shared it on her twitter page about an hour after it's release[11]. This led a string of Paramore covers, all of which were shared by Williams, who then reached out to Antonio and invited him on stage with them during their After Laughter album tour[12].

Due to his increasing popularity, Antonio put together his own band called The Brotherhood and began performing his own sets at Emo Nite LA shows and even performed at the last Vans Warped Tour in 2018[13]. These sets combined original arrangements with classic emo, rock and popular hits[14].

After seeing one of his saxophone covers, Neck Deep drummer Dani Washington also reached out to Antonio and requested for him to do a saxophone cover of their latest single "In Bloom". After hearing the cover, Dani invited Antonio to perform the song with them live in Baltimore during their "The Peace & The Panic" album tour[15]. He continued on with the band to perform at PlayStation Theater in New York City as well as The Henry Fonda Theater in Los Angeles. The Los Angeles show was also filmed Neck Deep and Antonio's late night television debut on Last Call with Carson Daly on NBC[16]. Due to the increasingly popularity of the collaboration, on August 1st 2018, Neck Deep released a new EP entitled "In Bloom: Versions" which featured two new versions of their hit In Bloom, one being the saxophone version with Antonio and the other an acoustic version[17]. Shortly after the release of the In Bloom: Versions EP, Antonio joined Neck Deep on their UK Arena tour with Issues, supporting Don Broco. The tour ended at legendary venue, Wembley Arena[18]. Antonio also joined Neck Deep at the last Vans Warped Tour show in Atlantic City on June 30th, 2019[19]. Antonio went on to join Neck Deep on east coast dates of their US tour with Lil' Wayne & Blink 182[20].

Antonio also joined State Champs and Stand Atlantic on east coast dates of the Sad Summer Tour. He also joined State Champs on several dates of their co-headline tour with Simple Plan.

Antonio was also featured on WBAL after one of his videos of performing to a field of cows went viral online[21]. This video was also shared by Yahoo and MSN.

Antonio was featured the song "Find Forever" on the latest Issues album, Beautiful Oblivion[22]. Antonio joined them on numerous dates of the Beautiful Oblivion tour with Polyphia, Lil' Aaron and Sleep Token[23]. He also recently performed with Intervals on their US tour supporting Chon[24].

After sharing Antonio's covers of "No Guidance"[25] and "Girl of My Dreams"[26] on Instagram, Chris Brown reached out to Antonio to record saxophone for his live arrangement of "Girl of My Dreams" for his US album tour, The IndiGOAT tour[27].

Antonio is currently working on his debut album.
