Sayyid Munavvar Ali Shihab Ba-Alawi Al-Husaini (Malayalam: പാണക്കാട് സയ്യിദ് മുനവ്വറലി ശിഹാബ് തങ്ങള്, Arabic: السيد منوّر علي شهاب باعلوي الحسيني) is an influential youth leader, social activist and author hailing from the Kerala state of India. As a graduate of globally reputed International Islamic University Malaysia, he is best known for his active role in the social media[3] as well as a columnist in various Malayalam magazines. He has authored one book and published many articles on various disciplines of Islamic studies & religious harmony and has participated in many international seminars and conferences.[citation needed] Currently, he serves as the President of the Kerala State Muslim Youth League, the youth wing of the Indian Union Muslim League.[4]
Family and Education[edit]
Munavvar Ali Shihab is a member of the Thangal family, who are of Yemeni Arab lineage and are believed to be descendants of the Prophet Muhammad.[5] He was born as the youngest son of Panakkad Sayyid Muhammad Ali Shihab Thangal, who was a Muslim religious leader, Islamic scholar and president of the Kerala State Committee, Indian Union Muslim League,[6]
After his primary and secondary level education from Kerala, Munavvar completed his senior secondary education in Chennai. He continued his degree level education from the Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge & Heritage, International Islamic University Malaysia and completed the course in 2003.[citation needed]
Leadership[edit]
During his study period in International Islamic University Malaysia, Sayyid Munavvar was elected as the President of the Ummatic Network for Strategic Development, an international organization aimed at the empowerment of global Muslim community. He also served as the Director of the Education Department of Student Representative Council, IIUM. After returning from Malaysia, he is very active in the social, religious, educational and cultural fields of Kerala. Representing Indian youth, he participated in different international conferences and seminars in various countries including United States of America, United Kingdom, Malaysia, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Switzerland and Netherlands. He also participated in a political exchange programme in the United States of America jointly organized by the American Council of Young Political Leaders and United States Department of State in 2004.[citation needed] In 2016, he was elected as the President of the Kerala State Muslim Youth League, youth wing of the Indian Union Muslim League.
