The Scientific Coalition for UAP Studies (SCU) is an American-based nonprofit think-tank of scientists and academics that adopts a rigorous and scientific approach to the research and investigation of UAPs.[1][2][3]

On 25 June 2021, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence published a report entitled Preliminary Assessment of Unidentified Aerial Phenomena, in which it was stated that 143 of the 144 UAP that were under review remained unexplained. The need to address this knowledge gap led to calls for the engagement of academia and scientific organisations, and on November 4, 2021, SCU was cited, along with NASA, the FAA, the NAS, the head of the Galileo Project at Harvard University, the director of the Optical Technology Center at Montana State University, and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), as providing experts for the “Aerial and Transmedium Advisory Committee” in Senator Kirsten Gillibrand's proposed amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2022 (NDAA).[4][5] On November 15, 2021, Senator Gillibrand re-filed this amendment as SA 4593 with Senators Rubio (R, FL) and Heinrich (D, NM),[6] and on November 18, 2021, re-filed it again as SA 4810 with Senators Rubio, Heinrich, Blunt (R, MO) and Graham (R, SC),[7] specifically naming SCU in all three filings

Operation[edit]

SCU was founded in 2017 and its ranks include university professors, former NASA researchers, ex-defense industry employees, and individuals from the tech industry.[8] Their homepage says, "We seek to share credible data with the public, the media, the government, and scientific institutions, so we can further our understanding of this enigmatic phenomenon." [9]

Amongst its core activities, SCU provides informed commentary on the scientific engagement with the UAP topic to mainstream media. On June 04, 2021, when media interest in UAP was intensifying ahead of the ODNI's 2021 Preliminary Assessment report, SCU executive board member Robert Powell was interviewed on CNN about the recent historical background of UAP cases involving the US military.[10] On May 17, 2022, SCU Public Relations Director Alejandro Rojas was interviewed on Fox Business regarding the US House holding its first UAP hearing in more than 50 years,[11] and on June 13, 2022, he was again interviewed on Fox Business about NASA conducting its own UAP investigations.[12]

Papers published in independent journals include Estimating Flight Characteristics of Anomalous Unidentified Aerial Vehicles (Kevin H. Knuth, Robert M. Powell, Peter A. Reali, pub Sept 25, 2019),[13] Estimating Flight Characteristics of Anomalous Unidentified Aerial Vehicles in the 2004 Nimitz Encounter (Kevin H. Knuth, Robert M. Powell, Peter A. Reali, pub Dec 16, 2019),[14] and Isotope Ratios and Chemical Analysis of the 1957 Brazilian Ubatuba Fragment (Robert M. Powell, Michael D. Swords, Mark Rodeghier, Phyllis Budinger pub in Spring 2022 issue of the Journal of Scientific Exploration, VOL. 36, NO 1).[15]

As of their most recent quarterly issue of the SCU Review, SCU claims 216 members, with over 50% having advanced degrees, and 31% having Doctorates.[16] Notable members include Christopher Mellon, and Dr. Richard Noll.

Various SCU members are involved with the Galileo Project, and the organization has partnered with several groups, including UFODATA, the UFO Data Acquisition Project (UFODAP) and UAPx,[17] and has a working relationship with France’s 3AF-SIGMA 2.[18] In 2021, SCU members Dr. Kevin Knuth, Peter Reali and Philippe Ailleris were three members of a six member panel at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics for a session titled "Advocating for Scientific Study of Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon – Technical Perspective with focus on Aviation Safety."[19]

Annual AAPC Conference[edit]

SCU hosts the annual Anomalous Aerospace Phenomena Conference (AAPC) Live Lecture Series featuring presentations from scientists or from advocates for UAP science. The first AAPC over the weekend of March 15-17, 2019, in Huntsville, AL. included presentations from Dr. Kevin Knuth, Dr. Conley Powell, Dr. Travis Taylor, and Luis Elizondo.[20] Freelance journalist, adjunct professor of journalism at New York University, and UFO skeptic Keith Kloor wrote of this event, "I attended the conference, curious to see if science would really take center stage at a UFO event. To my surprise, the panels were staid PowerPoint presentations. No talk of abductions or Big Foot; just lots of mathematical formulas from physicists about the challenges of interstellar travel and space propulsion, and clinical examinations of several incidents involving supposed UFOs, such as the Nimitz case."[21]

AAPC 2020 was live streamed due to the covid pandemic, and included presentations from Dr. Michael P. Masters, Dr. Kevin Knuth and Dr. Matthew Szydagis.[22] In 2021 the speakers included Dr. Silvano Colombano, along with team members from Sky Hub and UFODAP.[23] In 2022 the speakers included Dr. Alexander Wendt, Dr. Garry Nolan, former Navy pilot Ryan Graves, and Dr. Hakan Kayal, chairman of The Interdisciplinary Research Center for Extraterrestrial Science (IFEX) at the Julius Maximilian University of Wuerzburg, Germany.[24]
