Scott Hardie (9 August 1955) is a former American engineer and NASA welding engineer specialist on the space shuttles Challenger and Columbia.
Early life and education[edit]
He was born in Clear Lake, South Dakota and attended from South Dakota State University from 1976 to 1978 but did not graduate. He transferred to Washington State University in Pullman, Washington, where he graduated with a B.S. in civil engineering in 1981.
NASA career[edit]
He initially began working as a welding engineer in Saudi Arabia following college in 1981. His welding specialty enabled him to join NASA in 1983, working at the Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, Louisiana.[1]
During his first years at NASA, Hardie worked on Challenger and later worked on the Columbia. He eventually was promoted to a chief supervisory role of all the welding done on the space shuttles. Later, he was offered to begin astronaut training in the Shuttle Training Aircraft, but declined to return to the private sector.
Retirement[edit]
After retiring from NASA in 1993, he returned to his home state of South Dakota. He joined the Watertown School Board in 2016.[2]
