Scripps College Journal (previously The Scripps College Journal and originally The Scripps Journal), founded in 1999, is an annually-published print and digital literary magazine[1] based in Claremont, CA. It publishes poetry, fiction, nonfiction, visual art and academic essays[2] by undergraduate students at the Claremont Colleges consortium in Southern California.[3][4] It is built by undergraduate students at Scripps College and Pitzer College[5][6] and supported by the Scripps English department.
The Journal also publishes winners of Scripps College's Marie McSpadden Sands Writing Awards, recognizing excellence in academic essay-writing. Winning essays are selected by a committee of professors, and awardees receive a scholarship toward tuition for their sophomore year at Scripps College.[7]
The publication conducts interviews with high-profile authors like R.O. Kwon.[8]
Recent developments[edit]
In April 2019, the print publication underwent a visual redesign. The overhaul introduced a corresponding brand identity for marketing communications, which introduced a new logo and permanently dropped the "The" from "Scripps College Journal."[9][10][11]
The digital publication was redesigned in late 2020.[12]
Following the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, Scripps College slashed Scripps College Journal's printing budget[13], resulting in a reduced circulation for the 21st issue.[14]
