Seagulls Soaring In Iridescent Clouds is a 1989 Taiwanese TV series produced by Chinese Television System, based on Chiung Yao's 2 novels Where The Seagulls Fly and The Young Ones, starring Chin Han and Leanne Liu in the leading roles. This was essentially a combination of the first novel Where The Seagulls Fly and the second half of The Young Ones. All the main characters in the first novel Where The Seagulls Fly were retained, with slight changes. The character Yang Yushan from the first novel is merged with Hang Ni from the second novel (as Yang Yushan), with her being sick with leukemia instead of a heart condition. The only original character from the latter novel retained was Tang Hsiao-mei. The plot from The Young Ones was merged as a continuation of Where The Seagulls Fly. Also, new characters and subplots were added to make the story line more fluid.

Plot[edit]

Although the story is set in the 1970s, its attitude has been updated to the 1980s.

Part One[edit]

Yang Yushan is a pampered rich girl who attempts suicide but is saved by journalist Yu Muhuai, along with her gardener/bodyguard Ah Bao. After resuscitating her, Muhuai builds a campfire to dry their clothes. When he asks her for her name, she refuses to do so, just saying he can call her a seagull. From talking and watching the sunset, they develop feelings for each other. However, while treating her to dinner, she disappears on Ah Bao's motorcycle, leaving Muhuai alone and puzzled.

Three months later, while at a music hall with his male co-worker, Muhuai notices that the singer looks exactly like Yushan only with long hair (later revealed to be her twin sister Tang Hsiao-mei). However, the singer doesn't recognize him at all. Muhuai leaves disappointed and heartbroken.

That summer, while on an outing with his sister Mu-feng, she introduces him to Yushan (who still denies ever meeting him). Mu-feng says that Yushan is her college classmate and that they've known each other since they were freshmen in college. While visiting her at her home in Taipei, he bumps into Ah Bao and puts two and two together. While seeing Yushan, he also does a background check on her.

Mu-feng arranges a blind date with Yushan with the Ou Brothers (Shih-ke and Shih-hao), orphaned as kids and living off a trust fund left by their late father, a lawyer. Mu-feng and Shih-hao hit it off, while Shih-ke develops feelings for Yushan (who doesn't feel the same way). Later, when Muhuai confronts Yushan with the evidence he's compiled, she admits that she was the seagull he saved but denies being the singer. She then collapses of a seizure. At the hospital, Muhuai learns that she has Leukemia, and has been sick all her life. While she's recuperating at home, Muhuai and Shih-ke compete for her hand in marriage. By this time, Yushan has fallen in love with Muhuai but after a lover's quarrel, they break up and she decides to marry Shih-ke. Unbeknownst to her, however, Shih-ke already has a girlfriend (Yi-hung) which he's been going steady with for over 10 yrs.

Shortly after they're married, Shih-ke starts milking the Yang family for money, eventually taking over US$600,000 from his father in-law. He also begins to treat Yushan badly, even continuing to see Yi-hung, and coming home with her perfume on his clothes. Yushan starts seeing Muhuai on the side. After 3 yrs, Yushan asks for a divorce, but Shih-ke refuses to sign the papers, even after being offered a check for US$1,000,000 from his father in-law.

Yushan, Muhuai, and Ah Bao run away to the countryside and start a new life there, but is tracked down by Ou Shih-ke (who's by now a gangster), who hires men to beat up Muhuai and Ah Bao, sending them to the hospital with broken limbs, and cutting Yushan's hands as she tries to prevent him from stabbing them (by grabbing the blade with her bare hands).

Shortly after being discharged from the hospital, Muhuai and Ah Bao try to break into Yushan and Ou's mansion. Yushan comes to the balcony and tries to get them to leave because Shih-ke was coming home shortly. Shih-ke arrives early and tries to run over both of them, causing Yushan to fall off the balcony, suffering a fatal head injury which she eventually dies of.

Part Two[edit]

One year after Yushan's death, Muhuai runs into a singer that looks exactly like Yushan. Turns out, she's Tang Hsiao-mei, Yushan's twin sister. Their birth mother died after giving birth to them. Due to the fact that the Yang matriarch's daughter died a week after birth, the Yang Patriarch approached the newly widowed father with an offer to adopt one of the twins (Yushan). Hsiao-mei is a divorced mother of a 9 year old daughter (Hsien Hsien), living with her alcoholic father who used to be a primary school teacher. Her ex-husband, a degenerate gambler with an 18 yr old girlfriend, continues to ask her for money.

Shih-ke tries to move on with his life. But with the exception of Yi-hung, he has no other luck in love. Despite pleas from his brother that he marry Yi-hung, he refuses, claiming that he loved no one else but Yushan. Shih-hao is also in a dilemma. He loves Muhuai's sister Mu-feng, disagrees with his brother's self-destructive behavior, yet can't stand that Shih-ke is the center of every one of his friends' conversations.

Hsiao-mei meets up with the Yang family, and agrees to be their goddaughter. Her godfather tries to help her father stop drinking. She also begins to fall for Muhuai. When Shih-ke pays a surprise visit to the Yang's family mansion, he sees Hsiao-mei and thinks that he was tricked into believing that Yushan was dead. He and Muhuai start competing for Hsiao-mei's hand in marriage. Muhuai tries to stop it, not wanting history to repeat itself, however Shih-ke refuses to back down. He even gives Hsiao-mei a singing job, trying to get her to become a star.

One night, while Hsiao-mei was singing, Yi-hung shows up suddenly and announces who she was and her relationship to Shih-ke. Infuriated that his secret love life has been revealed, he breaks up with her for good, not realizing that she is now pregnant with his child. Despite reports from his friends, he still refuses to believe that he's going to be a father, and continues chasing Hsiao-mei, going as far as kidnapping her and Hsien Hsien (indirectly forming a bond with her which she begins calling him uncle).

When Hsien Hsien and Muhuai get kidnapped by Shih-ke's former goons for US$60k ransom, Shih-ke agrees to help rescue her on the condition that Hsiao-mei marries him. Out of the love for her daughter, Hsiao-mei reluctantly agrees. During the rescue, Hsien Hsien's father (who's now a taxi driver) is killed. Before dying, he asks Muhuai to take care of his daughter.

Hsiao-mei tells Shih-ke that their agreement was null and void because it was done under duress, and that she doesn't love him, she loves Muhuai. Shih-ke retaliates by having Hsien Hsien's father's girlfriend Hai Tang drug Muhuai's whiskey and falsely accuse him of rape (by holding her grandfather hostage). Yi-hung tries to ask Shih-ke to go back to her but he refuses. After attempting suicide, and with help from her friends Muhuai, Mu-feng, Hsiao-mei, and Shih-hao, she decides to stand up for herself and shuts Shih-ke out of her life forever.

After giving birth to Shih-ke's son, Yi-hung decides to raise him on her own (she refuses an check from Shih-ke in the amount of US$3000). Muhuai, Hsiao-mei, Mu-feng, Shih-hao, and Muhai's 2 co-workers, decide to have a triple wedding and get married on Apr 7th. However, before they are about to depart, Hai Tang claims that she's pregnant with Muhai's child. Despite pleas to get an abortion (a touchy subject back then), she refuses, and tells everyone about the so-called rape. In a fit of rage, Hsiao-mei decides to marry Shih-ke and they proceed to drive to Taichung.

When Yi-hung learns about the rape accusations, she's immediately suspicious. Confronting Hai Tang, she forces her confess that the rape accusations were false and she wasn't pregnant at all. They then spend the night searching for the wedding invitation to find where Shih-ke and Hsiao-mei were having the wedding and go there (to Taichung) to stop it just in time. Muhuai, Hsiao-mei, Mu-feng, Shih-hao, and Muhai's 2 co-workers have a triple wedding, and go on their honeymoon. Before leaving Shih-ke behind in defeat, Yi-hung tells him that there was a part of him that she always liked but at the end, he took everything for granted. Shih-ke then goes on a drinking binge.

After returning to Taipei a few days later, Shih-ke finds Shih-hao packing with Mu-feng to move to their own place. Noticing that his brother hasn't showered or changed his clothes since he was in Taichung, Shih-hao tells Shih-ke that since they were orphaned at such a young age, Shih-ke always served as the surrogate parents to him. Whenever Shih-hao was in trouble or screwed up, Shih-ke was always there to help him and bail him out. But when Shih-ke was in trouble, he had no one to turn to. However, Shih-ke has to think about his own son. Shih-ke starts thinking about Yi-hung. He also begins to self retrospect, and realize that he was wrong all along, everything he did was wrong.

The next day, Shih-ke picks up Hsien Hsien from school at noon. Telling her that it's his birthday, she agrees to celebrate it with him. While celebrating his birthday, Shih-ke asks her to make his 3 birthday wishes for him. She wishes that he patches things up with everyone, have a big birthday next year, and be happy. That evening, he goes to Yi-hung's place. Although still mad at him, she lets him in. He apologizes and asks her to come back and let him be there for their son. She replies she'll reconsider if he truly changes his evil ways. He quietly leaves and goes on top of a fire escape and says to himself again that he was wrong and that he was sorry.

A few days later, Shih-ke goes to the Yang family mansion to apologize and wish his new brother in-law well. However, Ah Bao stops him and chases him with a pair of branch cutters. Despite being hit, Shih-ke doesn't bother to fight back. In a fit of rage, Ah Bao stabs him in the stomach causing him to fall into a coma for 3 weeks. During that time, all the people whom he thought hated him, took turns taking care of him at the hospital, esp. his fiance Yi-hung.

It then cuts to 2 yrs later, when Ah Bao's released from prison for attempted murder. Everyone, except for Shih-ke and Yi-hung, were there to greet him. Shih-hao said you killed the worst part of my brother, now he's a kinder, better person. Later, at the beach, Muhuai and Hsiao-mei kiss during the sunset.
