The Self-Advocacy Association of New York State, also known as SANYS is a non-profit, self-advocacy organization by and for people with developmental disabilities.[1]

History[edit]

The organization was founded in 1986 by Bernard Carabello, a former resident of the Willowbrook State School.[2]

Activities[edit]

SANYS sets up local self-advocacy chapters around New York State. Members of SANYS' AmeriCorps project provide free presentations, titled Our Experience is the Best Teacher, to educate peers, communities, and staff about the lives of people with disabilities and what they have to offer. The Speakers Bureau speaks to community groups, schools, faith organizations, and agency boards of directors. They also provide training and support for self-determination.[3]

2016 SANYS Self-Advocacy Conference[edit]

From September 8 through the 10th in 2016, SANYS hosted their largest self-advocacy conference to date, with over 30 panels and dozens of speeches. AHRC New York City as well as various other organizations participated in the conference.[4]
