The Semmanadu Maravars are a type of Maravar race in Tamil Nadu.

Nomenclature[edit]

The Sembian foreigners are said to be the descendants of a leader who was appointed to rescue Rama Seetha and to guard the Thiruvana (bridge) he built to go to Sri Lanka. Another source states that the Chola king Rajaraja Chola appointed one of his generals as the Guardian of the Earth to defend Sethu and Pandya during the invasion of Sri Lanka. Sethupathis are important among the Sembian nomads. The Sembinadu foreigners came to guard the Sethu Dam and were called Sethukavalars and Sethupathis. Among the Sembian nobles, the Sethupathis are the crown-bearing kings, and the Sembian foreigners are also known as the Maravar kings.
