Serafino Ricci (March 10, 1867January 13, 1943) was an Italian numismatist, museologist and academic.

Life[edit]

He was born in 1867. He obtained a degree in literature from the Scientific-literary Academy of Milan in 1890 and the diploma of Archaeologist specializing in antiquities and classical epigraphs in 1894.

He was a university professor in 1896 of antiquity and classical epigraphs; in 1900 of archeology at the Universiy of Pavia; in 1907 of Numismatics and Medals; then for ten years at the University of Bologna. He was also the holder of a free course in numismatics and medals at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore of Milan, from the academic year 1938-1939 to January 1943.

From 1900, he was inspector and then director and consultant at the museums of Turin, Milan (Pinacoteca di Brera "Brera Art Gallery"), Monuments Superintendency, Rome (Roman Forum), Modena (Galleria Estense), Bologna (Civic Museum).

In 1903 he founded the Circolo numismatico milanese and the Bollettino italiano di numismatica e di arte della medaglia; in 1905 the Rivista archeologica lombarda (Lombard Archaeological Magazine). He also directed the Rivista italiana di numismatica.

He died in 1943 in Malnate.
