Issa Godinho (born Christian Henry Godinho; 26 September 1990), better known by his stage name Serious Truth[1], is an American musician, multimedia artist and independent record label executive. Serious Truth emerged from Massachusetts' underground hip hop scene in 2010. His debut hip hop singles Posted Up[2] and Warning[3] were released to iTunes and Spotify on August 14, 2013. His debut as an acid jazz keyboardist and composer came on January 15, 2020 with the release of As The World Spins. On November 3, 2020 Blaq Poet released an LP with Serious Truth titled Cultural Revolution reflecting on current events.[4]

Early life[edit]

Serious Truth developed into a graffiti artist as a pre-teen and was subsequently sent to a reformatory boarding school for vandalism at the age of 14.[1] He was sent to the Academy At Ivy Ridge where he played a minor role in 2005 Riot At Ivy Ridge.[5] At the academy he started his transition from graffiti artist to becoming a songwriter, a producer, a multimedia & recording artist.

Career[edit]

Aggravated Mayhem[edit]

Aggravated Mayhem was a hip hop group from the North Shore founded by Serious Truth and his cousins MindState & Reality in June 2009. During the summer of 2009 they recorded an album titled Not Guilty which was released by Serious Truth on YouTube at some point during mid-2012. Aggravated Mayhem split up as a music group in June 2010 upon the incarceration of MindState & Reality. They reunited briefly upon their release in 2014 to record a 3 song EP titled Posted Up. After the group split up, Serious Truth went on to resurrect the name as the CEO of Aggravated Mayhem Records[6] undertaking a project with Sean Price.[7] As of 2023, Aggravated Mayhem Records has signed three notable recording artists and has retained two of those three artists, 2009 XXL Freshman Class alumni Charles Hamilton and hip hop cultural pioneer Blaq Poet, veteran of the groundbreaking Bridge Wars.[8] Sean Price signed with Aggravated Mayhem Records but died tragically mid-way through a project. Aggravated Mayhem records also consists of at least a half-dozen other less notable artists, as well.

Productions and features[edit]

Serious Truth went on to collaborate on songs with notable hip hop acts such as Layzie Bone, Buckwild, Reks and Termanology[9] as well as producing music for Krumbsnatcha of Gang Starr Foundation. In 2011 he collaborated with Termanology, Reks and Krumbsnatcha on Truth Hurts. In 2012 he was a guest featured vocalist on a song titled The Show by Ryan K and Layzie Bone.

He has also been known to have his music played regularly on DJ Premier's radio show Live from Headqcourterz[10], as well as DJ Eclipse's radio show Rap is Outta Control, both broadcast on Sirius XM's Shade 45 satellite radio station.[11] Jamn 94.5 broadcasting out of Boston, Massachusetts is also known to occasionally play his music.[12]

Collaboration with Sean Price[edit]

In late 2014 Serious Truth and Sean Price began working on an album together.[13] With only two songs finished on the album,[14] Sean Price passed away in his sleep on the morning of August 8, 2015.

Cultural Revolution[edit]

Blaq Poet and Serious Truth released their collaborative album Cultural Revolution on November 3, 2020.[15] In the wake of the George Floyd killing at the hands of police they released the first single off of the album called Wake Up (Revolt!).[16] On July 7, 2020 they released a follow-up single called Heavy Industry featuring John Jiggs.[17] They released two subsequent singles in September and October respectively called Man On A Mission[11] and Born And Raised.[18] The album was inspired by current events and focuses on social change as well as returning to the original roots & cultural standards of hip hop. Cultural Revolution has become a cult classic among DJs and hip hop fans alike and amassed 200,000 streams[19] across all platforms as well as frequently finding its way onto radio stations in the UK, Germany, Belgium and USA.[10][11]

Controversial[edit]

Charles Hamilton and Serious Truth released their collaborative album Controversial[20] on May 25, 2021 to critical acclaim.[21][22][23] As well as designing the cover art, Serious Truth also played a piano, synthesizer, bass and drum machine on this project. XXL contributed this project to helping Charles Hamilton get back on track with his music career.[24]

Solo work[edit]

Serious Truth made his first solo album in 2013 titled Masshole[25]. On June 6, 2018 he released another album titled The Means Of Production, a mix of sampled instrumentals and songs with lyrics including a guest appearance from Krumbsnatcha. In 2020 he released two acid jazz composition albums. The first instrumental album was released on January 15, 2020 titled As The World Spins and the second album was released on May 4th of the same year and titled Fall From Grace. A third acid jazz instrumental album titled Audio Mural[26] was released on October 5, 2021 garnering critical acclaim.[27] On April 5, 2022 he released an orchestral score of the Ukraine Crisis titled Russo-Ukrainian War (Motion Picture Soundtrack).[28] On January 3rd, 2023, Serious Truth released a piano and keyboard centered jazz album titled Escapism in conjunction with Concord Record's legendary jazz subsidiary Concord Jazz with features from Charles Hamilton & Omani singer Soulafa Alnarjusia. The songs on Escapism range from a hip hop based intro, to original jazz compositions, to melodic Quran recitations, to a grand piano cover of John Coltrane's famous hit My Favorite Things.[29]

Music Leaks[edit]

On February 8, 2022, a leaked version of the song Urban Warfare (Produced by Buckwild of DITC) off of Blaq Poet & Serious Truth's upcoming unfinished album was played on one of the final episodes of DJ Premier's radio show Live from Headqcourterz.[30]

Feuds[edit]

Talib Kweli[edit]

In June 2018 Talib Kweli and Serious Truth entered into an intense and widely publicized feud with one another concerning the political state of USA, identity based social movements, popular culture, class consciousness and division of the population over trivial ideological differences. What started out as intellectual discourse quickly spiraled into ad hominem, doxing, threats and involvement of fans taking both sides of the argument once the feud eventually spilled over onto social media outlets[31] such as instagram. Celebrities such as Lil Scrappy, Ruste Juxx, Pete Rock, Malcolm-Jamal Warner and Busta Rhymes among others had also joined in on the argument. The feud was eventually put to rest in mid-July 2018 with assistance from Charles Hamilton, a mutual friend of both Talib Kweli and Serious Truth.
