Shadee Elmasry got his masters in comparative religion from George Washington University, and Ph.D in comparative religion from the University of London. In 2008, he was a lector in Arabic at Yale University and Trinity College.[1] He currently works as the Director of Education at the New Brunswick Islamic Center in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Views[edit]
Shadee Elmasry believes that many Muslims are too quick to side with the left and promote progressive social values, such as gay rights which he opposes as it is prohibited in Islam.[5][6]In 2016 Yaqeen Institute published a scholarly debate between Jonathan A. C. Brown and Shadee Elmasry. Jonathan A. C. Brown still upheld the orthodox Islamic position, but advocated for the path of political accommodation to secure reciprocal rights for Muslims in the United States as they are a religious minority.[7] Shadee Elmasry argued that no such accommodation is necessary, and after cultural and political developments, Jonathan Brown has changed his view.[8] He also called Islamic extremism "ignorant literalism".[9]
