Shaemless is a Dutch postpunkband established in 2009 in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. The band first started releasing music in 2012. They describe their sound as “an original mix of postpunk and garage, with influences of blues and surf”. They first gained notoriety in the Netherlands by participating in De Roos van Nijmegen, a Dutch talent show for amateur bands and artists. In the final for the 2015 edition, they won the competition as well as the audience award.[1][2]
Biography[edit]
Establishment (2009)[edit]
The original line-up of the band consists of Daan Sturm, Tom Brouwers and Cyril Rommens. To raise money for charity, the three first decided to make music together. When they were twelve years old, they played together for the first time in Rommens’ attic. Some time later, they would sign up for a band competition for kids called Rock ‘n Roll Jonkies, and proceeded to win this competition in 2010.
First recordings (2012)[edit]
In July of 2012, the three of them decide to record their music. This resulted in the release of their first EP called Shaemless, consisting of five self-written songs.
Early years (2014-2021)[edit]
Since 2014, the band plays with Pepijn Rondon Guasque as their bassist. In 2015, the band participated in De Roos van Nijmegen, a local talentshow for amateur bands and artists. Here, they won the audience award as well as first place. Amongst other opportunities, this resulted in a record label deal with Kroese Records. After this definite settlement in the music scene, they released three more EPs: Shaemless II (2016), Shaemless III (2018) and Shaemless IIII (2019). They consciously decided to use IIII instead of the IV, “because the boys liked the way it looked.” The music and live performances of Shaemless do not go unnoticed. In June of 2019, they are a support act for Wolfmother in Doornroosje, a large music venue in Nijmegen.[3]
Debut album (2022)[edit]
In February of 2022, the first album of Shaemless is released, titled SUUZ. The title of the record is a reference to the car the band drives to most of their gigs: a vehicle of the brand Suzuki, affectionately called Suuz. The album has a total of 11 tracks, amongst them Appreciate, White Statues, Weakness and Less Head, which previously appeared as single releases or on EPs. Because of their experimental way of making music, the tracks diffeer in sound and tempo, with each having their own influences from different music genres.
Despite a small source of income due to the lack of bookings, Shaemless used crowdfunding to realise their debut album. Fans could offer a donation or buy the vinyl through a pre-order, together with merchandise or CDs.[4]
