Shama Hyder is an Indian-American entrepreneur, keynote speaker, and best-selling author. She was named as Forbes top 30 Under 30 list for 2015.[3] She has also received other accolades such as the Technology Titan Emerging Company CEO Award[4] and the Gold Hermes Award for Educational Programming in Electronic Media.[5] She is the CEO of Zen Media[6] and author of the books Momentum: How to Propel Your Marketing and Transform Your Brand in the Digital Age and The Zen of Social Media Marketing: An Easier Way to Build Credibility, Generate Buzz, and Increase Revenue. In 2021, she was featured on Self-Made Mansions on HGTV.

Biography[edit]

Hyder was born on April 25, 1985. Her birthplace was Goa, India. She and her family immigrated to the United States, moving to Dallas, Texas in 1994. She attended college at the University of Texas in Austin, after graduating from R.L. Turner High School in 2003.[7] She earned a master’s degree in Organizational Communication and Technology in 2008.[8]

After her graduation, Hyder founded Zen Media, a B2B PR and marketing firm, in 2009. For her work during Zen Media’s first year, she was named a “Millennial Master of the Universe” by Fast Company, a Top 25 Young Entrepreneur by BusinessWeek,[8] and one of the Dallas Business Journal’s “40 Under 40 Achievers.” The Dallas Business Journal would go on to name her one of its “Top Women in Business.”

Hyder’s book, The Zen of Social Media Marketing: An Easier Way to Build Credibility, Generate Buzz, and Increase Revenue, was released by BenBella Books in 2010. The book focused on social media marketing on platforms such as Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook.[9] Hyder was also awarded the Technology Titan Emerging Company CEO award in 2010.[4]

In 2011, the U.S. State Department chose Hyder to be the only woman in a group of delegates providing mentorship to young entrepreneurs in Cairo as part of a government-sponsored initiative.[10] In the same year, Entrepreneur magazine named her as one of its “Super Sonic Youth.”[4]

In 2012, she hosted two weekly segments on the television station CW 33, KDAF-TV in Dallas, Texas named Tech Zen with Shama,[11] and Socially Sound with Shama.[12] In the same year, Hyder’s company Zen Media was chosen for the Empact100 list, which showcased the top 100 companies founded by young entrepreneurs.[13] Hyder was also selected as one of Brazen Life’s “20 Young Professionals to Watch in 2012” in an article published in Business Insider.[14]

In 2014, Inc. chose Hyder as one of its “Top 30 Under 30 Entrepreneurs” and gave her the nickname “The Queen of Social Media.”

Hyder was also named to Forbes’ list of “30 Under 30 in Marketing in Advertising” in 2015.[15]

In 2016, Hyder published her second book, Momentum: How to Propel Your Marketing and Transform Your Brand in the Digital Age, and received the Gold Hermes Award for Educational Programming in Electronic Media for her YouTube channel, Shama TV.[16] She was also awarded for “Excellence in Social Media Entrepreneurship” by Anokhi Media in the same year.[17]

Hyder has spoken at events hosted by organizations such as Bentley University, Hubspot, NASA, Siemens, and Syco. She has been featured in news publications such as CBS News, Bloomberg, Fox News, NPR, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times. She has appeared on the cover of Online Marketing Strategies Magazine, Color Magazine, and SPAN Magazine.

Hyder has written for multiple publications, including Portfolio, Forbes, Inc, Fast Company, and Newsweek. Since 2009, she has been a regular tech and business contributor on Fox Business and MSNBC.
