Shape Security is a cybersecurity company and unicorn startup[3][4] in Mountain View, California, which protects major websites and mobile apps[5] against credential stuffing and other types of cybercrime. It secures the largest companies in banking, air travel, and retail, such as Starbucks.[6][7]
Their technology was referred to by Ted Schlein of Kleiner Perkins as "the world's first botwall".[8][9]
In December 2019, F5 announced plans to acquire Shape Security for $1 billion US dollars.[10][11]
History[edit]
It was founded by Derek Smith, Justin Call, and Sumit Agarwal.[12][13] In 2012, Google’s click fraud czar, Shuman Ghosemajumder, joined the executive team.[14]
The company has raised $132 million in venture capital funding,[15] from Kleiner Perkins, Google Ventures, Google Chairman Eric Schmidt,[16] Venrock,[17] Norwest Venture Partners, and Sierra Ventures.[18]
It was the fastest-growing company in California from 2014 to 2017, according to Deloitte,[19] and was #1 in patents on the AI100 list of top artificial intelligence companies in 2019.[20]
In 2017, they introduced an AI-based system to track stolen passwords called BlackFish.[21][2]
Open source[edit]
In addition to its commercial business, the company is known for supporting numerous open source projects. Their engineering team includes the creator of PhantomJS, a web browser automation tool. Other projects the company officially open sourced include Unminify,[22] a tool for the deobfuscation of JavaScript, and Salvation,[23] a tool for implementing Content Security Policy. In 2019, they hired Java language co-author Gilad Bracha.[24]
