Shared Ground is a Georgist political party in the United Kingdom, following the ideology of 19th-century economist Henry George. It was previously known as the Young People's Party UK until 3 October 2021.[3] It was founded in 2012[4] and its leader has been Thomas Hall since March 2016. According to its manifesto, it intends to replace many taxes on the productive economy with a form of land value tax[5] and to replace the social security system with a citizens income.[6]

Electoral history[edit]

In by-elections[edit]

In 2012, Dr Rohen Kapur stood for the party at the Corby by-election[7] and Robin Smith stood for the party at the Croydon North by-election.[8] Neither won and both lost their deposits.

In 2018, Thomas Hall stood for the party at the Lewisham East by-election.[9] He received 18 votes (0.08%) meaning he lost his deposit.

In local council elections[edit]

In 2013 Gerard Mark Wadsworth stood for election to the Essex County Council division of Buckhurst Hill and Loughton South, gaining 21 votes (0.5% of the vote).[10]

In 2014 Gerard Mark Wadsworth stood for election to the Epping Forest District Council ward of Buckhurst Hill West, gaining 37 votes (2% of the vote).[11]

In 2016 Gerard Mark Wadsworth stood for election to the Epping Forest District Council ward of Buckhurst Hill West, gaining 46 votes (2.6% of the vote).[12]

In 2019 Thomas Hall stood for election to the Epping Forest District Council ward of Buckhurst Hill West, gaining 51 votes (2% of the vote).[13]

General election 2015[edit]

Two candidates stood for the party at the 2015 general election: Mark Wadsworth for the Epping Forest constituency and Dr Rohen Kapur for the Folkestone and Hythe constituency.[14][15] Both lost their deposits.

General election 2017[edit]

Three candidates stood for the party at the 2017 General Election: Thomas Hall for the Epping Forest constituency, Jon Collings for the City of Durham constituency, and Benjamin Weenen for the Cities of London and Westminster constituency. All three lost their deposits.

Shared Ground[edit]

In July 2021 the Young People's Party applied to have their name changed to "Shared Ground".[16] The name change became official on 3 October 2021.
