Shaul Meridor

Shaul Meridor (born June 17 1976) served as head of the Budget Department at the Ministry of Finance in Israel in 2017-2020.[1] He was also the CEO of the Ministry of Energy and was a member of the Tzemach committee for the inspection of the government's policy about Natural gas in Israel.

Biography[edit]

His father is Dan Meridor[2], former minister and politician, and his mother is the economist, Dr. Liora Meridor.

His brother, Avishay Meridor is a theater actor.

Meridor has a B.A degree in PPE from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

Career[edit]

Meridor startd his way in the public sector after graduating in 2002. His first job was at the Budget department at the Ministry of Finance, there he continued to serve in a number of roles up until 2013. then he was appointed as Vice Head of Budgets, responsible for infrastructure (Energy, water, transportation and agriculture).

Under minister Yuval Steinitz, he was in charge of the work of the Sasinski Committee and pushed reforms regarding electricity and natural gas infrastructures.

In 2013, Meridor went to the private sector and in his last role was the CEO of Greenergy Renewable Energy for six months.[3]

In 2015 he was appointed as the CEO of the Ministry of Energy by energy minister, Yuval Steinitz.

In 2017, Moshe Kahlon, minister of finance appointed him as head of the Budget Department at the Ministry of Finance.

On August 30 2020 he Submitted his resignation after disagreements between him and Israel Katz, minister of finance.

In his resignation letter he mentioned that "decisions are being made out of narrow interests". He added that "There is no doubt that your job as minister of finance is to lead policy, but you can not do that with total disregard to the need of orderly staff work and professional experts, you most certainly can not do that while trampling the rules, ignoring the macro data, trying to change budget estimates in order to make fictitious sources for distributing additional budgets and excluding the budgets department and others such as the ministry's legal adviser."

After his resignation, he said that "The minister had done things that should not be done", "It was impossible to keep going.[4] [5]

Personal life[edit]

Meridor lives in Jerusalem, married and father of four children.
