Shaul Navon is a medical and rehabilitative psychologist and an Israeli hypnotist.

Biography[edit]

Navon was born in Tel Aviv. He is one of two sons of Shmuel Navon[1], an educator, author, playwright and composer, and of Ruth Navon[2], a pediatrician. His maternal grandfather is Meir Kovner, the author and Zionist activist from Kaliningrad. His paternal uncle is painter, caricaturist and stage designer Aryeh Navon, winner of the Israel Prize, and his cousin is psychologist Prof. David Navon[3], also an Israel Prize laureate.

Navon attended the Tichon Hadash High School in Tel Aviv. In 1968 he completed his undergraduate studies in psychology and philosophy at Tel-Aviv University and in 1970 earned his master's degree in rehabilitative and occupational psychology from Columbia University in New York.[citation needed]

From 1970 to 1974 Navon worked as a rehabilitative and occupational psychologist in the training department of the Israel Military Industries (IMI). Subsequently, he worked at Loewenstein Hospital in Ra'anana and at the Hadassah-Rokach Hospital in Tel Aviv. From 1976 through 2007 he administered the Rehabilitative Psychology Service at the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center (Ichilov).[citation needed]

In 1994 Navon completed his doctoral studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The topic of his dissertation was "Internal Dimensions of the Family System Related to Family Adaptation after Spouse's Mastectomy."[4]

After completing hypnosis studies at Tel-Aviv University in 1996, Navon obtained a license to practice hypnosis and conduct scientific research on hypnosis in accordance with Israeli law[5]. He then established hypnosis treatment services in the Tel-Aviv branches of the Clalit and Meuchedet Health Services organizations. He also established hypnotherapy services in the Gastroenterology Department at Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center and in the Fibromyalgia Clinic of the hospital's Rheumatology Institute.

In 2001 Navon was certified as an expert instructor in medical psychology. Today in his private practice he works as a hypnotherapy specialist, treating various emotional and medical problems. He also serves as the psychologist for the Israel Performing Arts Medicine Center.[citation needed]

Research[edit]

Navon's research focuses on hypnotherapy and psychotherapy as therapeutic methods for eliminating patient resistance. In 2005 Navon developed a model called the Illness/Non-illness Model[6] for treating patients with physical illnesses. This model is based upon a paradigm in psychotherapy and hypnotherapy that seeks to transform the patient's states of resistance into cooperation during the course of treatment. The approach is based upon providing two possible alternatives to shift from an illness narrative to a non-illness narrative.

Navon also specializes in treating performing musicians, particularly for stage fright and fear of public speaking (glossophobia), helping them achieve optimal performance in preparation for concerts or recitals.
