Shauna Sylvester is a Canadian entrepreneur who is currently running as an Independent to become the mayor of Vancouver, Canada.

Biography[edit]

Sylvester was born in Nelson BC, grew up in Vancouver, British Columbia and graduated from St. Patrick’s Regional High School. She is a graduate of McGill University and Simon Fraser University. She founded IMPACS (Institute for Media, Policy and Civil Society) in 1997 and serves as the Executive Director.[1] Her early work was related to the peace movement during the Cold War nuclear arms race.[2]

Sylvester has worked at the International Development Education Research Association (IDERA), Cuso International, and Canada World Youth. She has served on Vancouvers Task Force on Affordable Housing.[3] She is currently the Executive Director of Simon Fraser University’s Morris J Wosk Centre for Dialogue and Co-Founder and Senior Advisor of SFU Public Square.[4]

In 2003, she was named one of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40 in The Globe and Mail and received a similar award from Business in Vancouver Magazine in 2000.[1][5]

On Thursday, April 5, 2018 Shauna Sylvester announced her candidacy to be the next Mayor of Vancouver and is running as an independent.[3][4][6] If elected, she would become Vancouver's first female mayor.[7][8]
