Shazia Bashir (born 20 December 1984) is an Indian singer and vocal artist, primarily a singer of Achbal area of Thejiwara village in south Kashmir's Anantnag district. She started singing primarily in Kashmiri, but has also performed in Sufi, Ghazals and light classical music.[1] She is known as a renowned singer of Kashmir valley for achieving eminence singing in various genres and has performed in London in 2015.[2][3][4]
Early life
Shazia Bashir was born in south Kashmir's Anantnag district. After her father passed away, she left her education while she was pursuing her BA first year at Women College, Anantnag. She was always encouraged by her father to develop her virtuosity in the music industry.[5]
Career
The singing career of Shazia Bashir started in 2007 or 2008 with a TV show called Milay Sur, broadcasted on DD Kashir. After several years of practice in "Miley Sur", she now performs in musical concerts across the country, in United Kingdom and many other countries.[6] Besides performing in light music, Ghazal, Sufi, Hamd and Naat genres, she has been singing Kirtan, Bhajan and Lila for Kashmiri Pandits.[7][8]
Notable Participations
In August or February 2017, Shazia Bashir participated as a judge in a musical talent hunt programme Chhoona Hai Aasmaan along with celebrity singer Sukhwinder Singh,[9] organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Police, intended to provide a platform to the youth to showcase their talent in the music industry.[10] State dignitaries like Mehbooba Mufti, Director General of Police Shesh Paul Vaid and other personalities did not attend the program as a mark of respect to the supreme sacrifice of police officers who were killed in Pulwama encounter.[11]
Awards
In 2012, Shazia Bashir was honored with the "Naseem Akhter Memorial" Award and the "Bakshi Memorial Committee" Award in 2014. In 2015, Shazia was conferred Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar[12] of Sangeet Natak Akademi and Mehmeet Syed for her notable talent in the field of folk music of Jammu & Kashmir.[13] [1]
