India was Muhammad Jamaluddin Sheikh, an ethnic turk from the Ottoman empire who traced his lineage back to Timur (Tamerlane) and the Barlas tribe. He became the zamindar[3][4] of Kowlas village around 1915 after the premature death of the last Rajput King of Kowlas, Raja Kunvar singh.[5][4] After which the Nizams decided to take the village directly under their control.

They remained as zamindars up until 1947 when the Partition of India took place. After Operation Polo, some family members migrated to Karachi, Pakistan and some chose to remain in Hyderabad. Some of the family adopted the name Kowlas after their former village, and later changed it to Cowlas.
