Shibli Rubayat Ul Islam is a Bangladeshi academician and government official.[1] He is the Chairman of Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission.[2][3] Besides, He is also the Professor and Former Chairman at Department of Banking & Insurance in University of Dhaka, and the former Chairman at Sadharan Bima Corporation.[4][5]
Childhood[edit]
Islam was born in an aristocrat Muslim family in 1968 in Dhamrai, Dhaka. He completed his Secondary Certification from Government Laboratory High School and Higher Secondary Certification from Dhaka College with distinction. Later he completed his graduation and post-graduation from the Finance & Banking Department, University of Dhaka.
Family Background[edit]
His father late Rafiqul Islam Khan was the Director of ACI Limited and former Managing Director of National Bank Limited.[6] His mother Hasina Mamtaz Begum is a prominent music artist. His wife Shenin Rubayat is a faculty member of BRAC University and news presenter of BTV. Shibli Rubayat is father of two sons. His Elder son has completed his graduation from Eastern Illinois University, USA and younger son is studying IT at the same university.
Career[edit]
After completing higher education, he joined the University of Dhaka as an Academician. He was later elected Dean of Business Studies Faculty of the University of Dhaka for a record consecutive four times which is a notable achievement for a Professor globally.[7] He has uplifted the image of the Business Studies Faculty in the global arena with his innovative thinking, organizational excellence, global leadership and adequate management knowledge.
He is an eminent educator in the field of Finance and Banking.[8] He has been in the field of education for more than two decades. His specialization is Law and Practice of Banking, Retail and E-Banking, Foreign Exchange and International Banking, Corporate Governance, and Legal Aspects of Business.[9][10] He is the Finance and Banking textbook author for secondary students published by the National Curriculum and Textbook Board of Bangladesh.[11] He is one of the editors of "The Economic Development of Bangladesh in the Asian Century: Prospects and Perspectives", a globally accepted reference book of the macro-drivers of growth behind the economic development of Bangladesh.[12] Shibli Rubayat has numerous research publications in his field, and he accomplished many international research paper presentations overseas.[11][13]
He has been nominated as a 'Guest Professor' at Sichuan University at Chengdu in China till 2021.[14] He has conducted several research projects for some reputed organizations like Bangladesh Bank, BGMEA, Bangladesh Police, RAB, ILO, SME Foundation. Besides having first-class in his academic career, he also has degrees and training in finance and banking from UK, Australia and Korea.[14]
He has been the Syndicate Member at East West University and Southeast University, Senate Member of the University of Dhaka and National University, Finance Committee Member of the University of Dhaka, and Open University, Member of the Governing Body of Institute of Business Administration - University of Dhaka, Northern College, Dhaka School of Business (BIBM), Dhaka School of Economics, ASA University, Open University, Treasurer at Dhaka University Teachers Association, Chairman of Governing Body at Daffodil Institute of Information Technology (DIIT) and Member of the selection board and committee of many banks, universities and colleges.[15]
As the Chairman of the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission, he has taken many steps to modernize the capital market.[16][17][18] He has drawn the attention of many foreign investors to invest in Bangladesh.[19][20] Under his leadership, Bangladesh Capital Market has become the best performer globally during the second half of 2020.[21][22][23]
