History[edit]

Aleen Kuperman, Samantha Fishbein and Jordana Abraham of Betches Media founded Ship in partnership with Match Group in January 2019.[3]

Kuperman, Fishbein, and Abraham had met former CEO of Match Group, Mandy Ginsberg and discussed what was missing from the dating app market as well as the importance of friends’ presence in the dating process. According to Cosmopolitan Magazine, the founders felt like there could be a better way to incorporate your friends into your online dating experience, which lead to their decision to launch Ship.[4]

The name “Ship” comes from the term "shipping" meaning “to root for a couple” and relationship, highlighting the socially-inclusive aspect of the application[5]. The term illustrates the importance of friend’s approval throughout the dating process.[6]

Operation[edit]

Users can join as either “single” or “in a relationship,” but only “single” users have a public profile and can get matched.  Users in relationships can sign up without uploading a photo but are required to enter their first and last name, birthday and gender. They are then allowed to swipe on their friend’s behalf.  Those users must friend a single user in order to find matches on that friends’ behalf.[7]

Friend connections on the platform can message each other and view each other’s dating activity through an activity feed; however, users can only message their own matches. According to Tech Spot, “53 percent of matches made on the app are a result of friends swiping on behalf of their friends”[8]. There is also a group chat feature in product that allows users to engage in conversation and share profiles with each other.[9]

Marketing[edit]

Ship markets the app as a way to “date someone your friends already like.”[10]

Date From Home[edit]

Amid the Coronavirus pandemic of 2020 Elite Daily reported that Ship launched a “Date From Home” feature that encouraged users to pledge to date virtually, with tens of thousands of new downloads, as well as a 45% increase in group chat messages and 20% increase in right swipes[11]. Additionally, the team created a library on their website which supplies users with downloadable backgrounds to enhance their virtual dating experience through Zoom.
