Shoplocal is a marketing and advertising service that builds, hosts and maintains catalogs and online weekly ads exclusively for big-box store retailers. Its partners include U.S. retailers in the circular space, namely the brands of Ace Hardware, Kohls, Office Depot, Michael's, TrueValue, Target, Lowe's, Staples, Jo-Ann, CVS Pharmacy and Walgreens. ShopLocal SmartMedia services can then take catalogs and weekly ads and serve them up to customers via interactive, localized banner advertising that can be run anywhere on the Internet.

Ownership[edit]

The company was founded as SalesHound.com, LLC in March 1999, and was renamed CrossMedia Services, Inc. on July 30, 2001.[citation needed] In 2004, TKG Holdings, in a joint venture equally owned by Gannett Company, Knight Ridder (now owned by The McClatchy Company) and Tribune Company, acquired CrossMedia Services for US$75 million. The venture investors in Crossmedia Services were Trident Capital, Gabriel Venture Partners and River Cites Capital.[1] In 2006, adjustments were made to ownership:[2] Gannett Company (42.5%), Tribune Company (42.5%), The McClatchy Company (15%). On July 8, 2008 Gannett acquired both Tribune's 42.5 percent share for $22.3 million and McClatchy's 15 percent share for $7.9 million, making ShopLocal 100 percent owned by Gannett.[3] Shoplocal is now part of TEGNA Digital, and has merged with PointRoll to create Cofactor Digital. In December 2016, Liquidus, a Chicago-based digital media/ad tech agency purchased CoFactor.
