Sidda Raghava Rao (born 10 August 1957) is an Indian politician who was elected to the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly in 2014. He was appointed Minister for Transport, Roads and Buildings and later to the Andhra Pradesh cabinet as Minister for Environment, Forests, Science and Technology. After losing in the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, Raghava Rao joined the YSR Congress Party in June 2020 from Ongole Assembly constituency on a Telugu Desam Party (TDP) ticket.[further explanation needed]
Early life[edit]
Sidda Raghava Rao was born in Chimakurthy, in the Prakasam district of the undivided Andhra Pradesh to Sidda Venkata Subbamma and Sidda Venkateswarlu. He grew up in a large family of eight brothers. His early schooling was completed at Chimakurthy and he then went to Bapatla to pursue intermediate education. In 1977, he graduated in Commerce from Andhra University.
2014 Election[edit]
Raghava Rao won the 2014 Assembly elections from Darsi Assembly constituency and became a minister in the N. Chandrababu Naidu cabinet. The Telugu Desam Party won the Darsi seat after a period of 15 years. The TDP also formed government in the newly reorganised state of the residual Andhra Pradesh – formed in June 2014 from the division of the original (1956) wider state from its newborn offshoot, Telangana.
Ministerial roles[edit]
Raghava Rao was made the Minister for Transport, Roads & Buildings.
During his tenure, significant advancements were made in modernizing the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC), including the improvement of bus stations. Eighty-four JNNURM buses with GPS services were introduced, alongside thirty new AC buses and 311 additional services. Under Raghava Rao's leadership as minister, APSRTC also explored the potential of utilizing bus stations as commercial spaces to generate revenue for the corporation.
In response to the high number of road accidents involving cyclists without head protection, Raghava Rao introduced a policy making the use of safety helmets mandatory for all cyclists. Additionally, a study was conducted to identify accident-prone areas, leading to their repair by the roads department, which contributed to a reduction in the accident rate.
