The siege of Chyhyryn (1659) was a military clash between Yurii Khmelnytsky's cossacks and Ivan Vyhovsky's, Danylo Hrek's cossacks.

Battle

The first armed conflict in the lands of modern Cherkasy region, which can undoubtedly be attributed to the beginning of the "Ruin", was Yurii Khmelnytsky's campaign against Chyhyryn in November–December 1659. The prerequisite for this action was the refusal of the Chyhyryn garrison and Ivan Vyhovsky's wife O. Stetkevychivna to hand over the city to representatives of Yurii Khmelnytsky, who was elected hetman by the September Malostav Cossack Council. The new hetman's forces were opposed by the city's garrison led by D. Hrek, four hundred Cossacks of I. Vyhovskyi, a detachment of German mercenaries; the support of Y. Khmelnytskyi's forces was provided by the Cossacks of K. Kanivets' Chyhyryn Regiment.[1] The details of the siege are unknown, but an interesting circumstance attracts attention: since most of the hetman's office was located in Chyhyryn, Y. Khmelnytsky had to negotiate with Moscow officials without them. This allowed the latter to resort to fraud in order to achieve the conclusion of the Pereyaslav Agreement of 1659, which was unfavourable for the Cossack Hetmanate.
