Simon Crowther is a British entrepreneur and civil engineer. He is the founder of the FPS Group – a Nottingham-based company specialising in flood protection. It consists of Flood Protection Solutions Ltd and FPS Environmental Ltd.

Early Life[edit]

Crowther was born in 1993.[1] Crowther attended Nottingham High School, an independent fee-charging day public school in Nottingham, England.[2]

In 2007, Crowther’s family home in Woodborough, Nottinghamshire was flooded.[3] The 2007 floods saw multiple areas across the Midlands and the North receive record numbers of rainfall throughout June and July – leading to millions of pounds worth of damage and locals displaced.[4]

Career[edit]

Crowther established Flood Protection Solutions Ltd in 2012.[5]

In 2014, Crowther’s work regarding flood protection was discussed by Mark Spencer MP in the House of Commons, with Owen Paterson MP commenting that he would be very interested to hear from Crowther.[6]

Crowther founded FPS Environmental Ltd[7] in 2021.

In 2022, Crowther featured in Flood Re’s documentary to launch the world first ‘Build Back Better’ scheme.[8] The documentary features a mixture of notable individuals from Flood Re, Government and industry. The scheme promotes the availability and affordability of flood insurance and enables participating insurers to offer customers access to reimbursement costs of up to £10,000, over and above work to repair damage and loss caused by a flood.[9]

Crowther is currently an author for Elite Business Magazine, where he wrote about his mental health journey[10].[11]

Crowther's work was outlined in the Metro's "How I Made It".[12]

Notable Achievements[edit]

In 2010, Crowther represented the United Kingdom in the Stockholm Junior Water Prize as part of the World Water Week in Stockholm. Crowther’s invention was ‘Dry Flood’, an automated flood barrier.[13]

Crowther was invited to be a member of the judging panel of the Great British Entrepreneur Awards after winning their ‘Young Entrepreneur of the Year’ accolade in 2016.[14]

He owns the trademark for the phrase ‘The Flood Guy’ after the motion was accepted in November 2021.[17]

Notable Media Attention[edit]

It was revealed in 2015 that Crowther offered the Environment Agency a loan of Flood Protection Solutions’ Water-Gate barriers, sandbags, and pumps during the 2015-2016 floods, which the Agency declined.[18]

In 2016, Crowther published an open letter on social media to the then MP for Gedling, Vernon Coaker, displaying his dissatisfaction with the explanation of student loan interest rates.[19] This garnered widespread attention from multiple press outlets.[20][21]

Crowther appeared in the 2021 Channel 4 documentary Summer of Wild Weather: Is Worse Still to Come?[22][23]

Following Crowther’s Attitude 101 Listing, a local newspaper reported Crowther was gay.[24] Crowther was not ‘out’ to his Grandparents. His Grandparents were shown the article, and subsequently sent Crowther a ‘heartwarming’ email.[25] Crowther shared the email online and it received significant media coverage.[26]
