Simpa Samson (born 22 May 1986 ) is a Nigerian video and photo Journalist, documentary filmmaker. His 2019 work about the interrelatedness between northeastern Nigeria battle against terrorism and the battle against climate change was 2nd runner-up at the Hostwriter prize awards finalist.[1]

Early life and education[edit]

Samson was born in Ihima, Kogi state, as the 2nd of 5 children into a christian family. His family moved to Ajaokuta steel company when he was two. Samson obtained his A-level at Abubakar Tatari Ali polytechnic in 2007. In 2008, he gained admission to study business administration at the university of Abuja. Whilst serving as a NYSC member, he delved into filmmaking and created THE LOST TRUTH, a short film which was selected for the 2013 Eko International Film Festival.[2]

Career[edit]

Centered around health, insurgency, humanity and environmental issues in West Africa, his work has been widely published.[3] In 2017, he started filming for TRT World. Since then, he has filmed for various media.[4] He currently works as a freelance journalist.

Boko Haram coverage[edit]

Samson has spent a large part of his journalistic career covering the terrorism and insecurity in the northeastern part of Nigeria. As a freelancer, he has covered boko haram related stories for Deutsche Welle, TRT World, Al Jazeera and Quartz.[4] His Hostwriter awards nomination was earned with a co-authored story on boko haram and climate change.[5]
