Siva Magesh is an Indian-born fencer who competes in the Epee event. He has won a Gold medal in the Individual event at the XIV CADET NATIONAL FENCING CHAMPIONSHIP 2017. He is supported by the GoSports Foundation through the Abhinav Bindra Targeting Performance Programme.
Early life and background
Belonging to a region considered to be the tip of the country, Kanyakumari, Siva Magesh took to the sport of fencing from the age of 8. A fencer named Jishvanidhi from Army Sports Institute, Pune took Siva for trials at the Institute. There he was advised by one of the Army officials to take part in their national talent identification exercises. After assessing his capabilities, Siva, who had a natural flair for the sport, was drafted into fencing and has been training at the centre since being absorbed in 2010.
Career
Initially, Siva faced problems arranging funds to travel for tournaments as fencing was a little-known sport in India, but he stayed positive and kept working hard, only to later find great success even in international tournaments. He won a silver in the individual event and bronze in the cadet team in the epee category at the 2016 Asian Junior & Cadet Fencing Championship, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, where he was competing with some of Asia’s finest and emerging fencers. Siva’s best quality is his positive thinking, and this ability of his helps him in overcoming pressure during tournaments. He is a great learner and wants to improve his fear factor during matches to garner better results in the future. Hence, during his free time, Siva tends to follow sports closely and tries to pick qualities from the world’s best fencers. A big admirer of Jérôme Jeannet, Olympic Gold Medalist from France, Siva’s next aim is to win a medal at the Junior World Championship in February 2018 and eventually an Olympic medal, which he considers his dream.
