Siya Kakkar (9 September 2004 – 24 June 2020) was an Indian teenage TikToker, Instagram model and dancer. Siya Kakkar rose to prominence and gained popularity on social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.[2][3] She was well known for sharing music video clips of herself performing dance rituals. As of June 2020, she had around 1.1 million followers on TikTok.[4] She died on 24 June 2020; however, some sources such as India Today claimed that she died on 25 June 2020 instead.[5]

Death[edit]

She was reported to have died by suicide at her residence in Geeta Colony, Delhi on 24 June 2020 at the age of 15.[6][7] The Delhi police confirmed that Kakkar who was a minor died by suicide at around 9pm by hanging from the ceiling fan in a room.[8][better source needed][not in citation given] The police were reported to have received a phone call from one of Siya's family members on the night of the incident. Siya was taken to the hospital immediately but was reported to have died on arrival and her body was delivered to her family for last rites.[9]

Her suicide was compared to the death of popular Indian Bollywood star & actor Sushant Singh Rajput. Her death sparked shock waves in social media and also triggered debates and discussions regarding depression among young children and teenagers during the COVID-19 pandemic.[10] Prior to her death, she was believed to have uploaded her latest TikTok video within the space of 20 hours which eventually received over 17 million views.[11] Her death was also confirmed by her manager Arjun Sarin.[12][13] No suicide note was found at her house after her death.[14][15]
