Skinshape is the musical project of British multi-instrumentalist William Dorey. In the recording studio Dorey writes, records, performs, and produces all of the project's music.[1][2][3][4][5]

Musical Career[edit]

Skinshape originated when Dorey was a teenager, and was especially inspired by the records of Pink Floyd[6] and the sounds of '60s British Psychedelia as well as Reggae and Funk. Dorey experimented with '60s reel-to-reel tape machines and other vintage analogue music equipment as a way to achieve his distinctive sound.[7]

The first Skinshape gigs were DJ sets, starting in 2010. Dorey began work on what would be the first Skinshape album in 2013.[8] This self-titled album was released on Melting Records in October 2014.[9] Dorey writes the music and lyrics and plays most of the instruments himself, as well as supplying most of the vocals. He collaborates with other musicians for additional instruments and vocals. Dorey records the artists using as much analogue equipment as possible. He records his music primarily at The Arch studio in North London, but also at home with a bedroom studio setup, where he also mixes the tracks.

Skinshape released its second album “Oracolo” in 2015.[10][11] Oracolo (the Italian for Oracle) features untitled cover art by New York based artist Jared Buschang.[12] The album was remastered in 2020.[13]

A third album "Life and Love”was released in 2017.[14] Dorey was the bassist in the band "Palace" from 2014 until October 2017, when he stepped down.[15][16] One of the reasons Dorey felt the need to step down was a distaste for performing live and an interest in retaining personal anonymity[17] as such, he does not perform live as Skinshape,[6][14] nor does he like to engage in self-promotion.[18]

A fourth album “Filoxiny” was Skinshape's debut release on Lewis Recordings in 2018.[19] "Filoxiny" is a deliberate misspelling of the Greek word "philoxenia", literally translating as "love of strangers", and meaning what Dorey terms "advanced hospitality".[19] Strings and horns feature heavily on the album, which Dorey describes as comparable to "the soundtrack for an imaginary film".[20] Thomas H Green, regular music critic for The Telegraph[21] and Mixmag[22], writing for The Arts Desk compared the songs on Filoxiny which feature vocals to Pink Floyd, describing the general sound as "twinkling, jazz-iced downtempo".[23] Filoxiny was listed in Q Magazine's "354 Albums to Blow Your Mind".[24]

A fifth album "Umoja" (Swahili for "Unity") was released on Lewis Recordings in 2020 and received generally positive reviews, with particular praise for his embrace of African rhythms.[25][26][27][28] It features vocals in five different languages.[18]

Dorey's sixth album, "Arrogance is the Death of Men" released in November 2020, though it had originally been said to be being released on December fourth that same year.[29][30][31] He reportedly wrote a significant portion of a sixth album whilst in lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[18]

A seventh album, "Nostaligia" was released in November 2022.

Usage in TV/Film[edit]

The single "I Didn't Know" features on the soundtrack of the Netflix film "All the Bright Places" released on 28 February 2020.[18]

The song "Summer" features in the 2020 Netflix series "Outer Banks" (season 1, episode 3).

The song "Heartache" features on the soundtrack for the movie "Who Needs Enemies".[32][33]

The song "Take My Time" features on the soundtrack of the Netflix series Elite (season 4, episode 3).

The song "Left with a Gun" features in the 2021 Netflix series "Outer Banks" (season 2, episode 1).
